After a summer where seemingly loyal Senators turned their back on the fan base and the city, with yesterday’s announcement, we got a good reminder of what real loyalty looks like.
Thomas Chabot is the 11th Captain of your Ottawa Senators.
In the end, it was probably a slam-dunk choice. Not that the other options weren’t great. Jake Sanderson could grow into the role. It might bring out a different side of Tim Stützle. And it would have been a fitting send off for Claude Giroux. All three of those guys will be important pieces in the leadership that will drive this team.
But in the end, the perfect option was there all along.
Thomas Chabot has spent his entire career with the Senators. Entering his tenth season with the franchise, Chabot has been through it all in the red, black and gold. In the early days of this current core, Thomas Chabot was one of the first to lock in. He picked this city and he believed in what we could build here. And from the moment he first pulled on that jersey, you could see how much this team and this community means to him.
A warrior on the ice, a leader in the room and a pillar in the community. He has it all.
In the end, while the Coach and the General Manager make the announcement, it’s the locker room that chooses a Captain. And in that sense, some say the players in that room already knew that Chabot was the guy.
Yesterday, the team finally made it official.
