Sens, Alfie Negotiating New Deal

As the clock strikes midnight tonight, the Ottawa Senators Captain and face of the franchise Daniel Alfredsson will officially become a free agent.

And while no players can actually sign until Friday, teams are allowed to call unrestricted free agents and present their city as an option. And while I still can't imagine a scenario where Daniel Alfredsson ever leaves this city, it's just strange to think teams can even call him to talk about the possibility.

I'm sure GMs around the league know that Alfie's heart is here in Ottawa, but you'd have to think there are a handful of teams around the NHL that would at least pick up the phone to see where he stands.

Just writing that sentence makes me a little uncomfortable.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun tweeted this afternoon that as of this morning, the Senators have not talked to Alfie's agent JP Barry about a contract. But it seems that has since changed as just now, Chris Johnston from Sportsnet suggested that the two sides have touched base and are expected to talk again later tonight.

Let's hope they can get something done before someone like the Boston Bruins gives Alfie a call later this evening.
