Senators Sign MacEwen to Three-year Deal

While the situation with Alex DeBrincat grinds towards an inevitable conclusion, the Ottawa Senators have continued to tinker with their NHL roster.

Today, the team announced that they have signed forward Zack MacEwen to a three-year contract worth $775,000 per season. It’s a one-way contract.

The 26-year old PEI-native has 186 games of NHL experience under his belt, including 56 games split between Philadelphia and Los Angeles last season.

While fairly limited offensively, MacEwen will bring a much-needed physical element to the team’s bottom six heading into next year and fills a spot previously occupied by Austin Watson.

Obviously it’s a little unusual to see this kind of term handed out to a bottom six forward but at the league minimum in terms of yearly salary, it’s a safe way to fill out the roster. The Senators are going to be flirting with the salary cap for the foreseeable future so you can see why they’d like the idea of a guy filling a particular role on the team at an affordable price.

Here’s Pierre Dorion on the signing…

“Zack’s a player with strong character who adds increased physicality to our lineup. He’s a hard-nosed, competitive player who’s a tenacious forechecker and who demonstrates a routine willingness to go to the hard areas.”
