Senators Remain Interested in Tanev

As far as wins go, that overtime victory against the Detroit Red Wings was one of the biggest of the year.

Partly because Red Wings supporters have quickly emerged as some of the most obnoxious fans in the NHL. Most of ’em anyway. And partly because it was the sometimes lazy Alex DeBrincat that was burnt on the OT winner. But mostly because we’re staring down the barrel of more than a week without Sens hockey and it was critically important that we head into the break with the vibes dialed up as high as possible.

An OT win helps with that obviously. So does a lingering trade rumour.

Enter Chris Tanev…

With each passing day it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the Ottawa Senators have a serious interest in the Calgary Flames defenceman. While they may not be alone in their pursuit, the Senators are definitely in the mix and maybe right at the front of the line.

Heading into the deadline, the 28th place Senators certainly aren’t buyers but that doesn’t mean Steve Staios is against the idea of “adding” to the current lineup. Tanev is set to be a UFA this summer but if the Sens were to make a move here, it’s because they think they can convince Tanev to stick around.

The right shot defenceman is never going to be a huge contributor on offence but he makes up for that with steady play in his own end of the rink. At 34 years of age, he’s certainly on the back nine of his NHL career but he still brings that mix of veteran presence and defensive dependability that the Senators are looking to add to the current group.

Something to discuss for the next…8 DAYS!
