Senators Extend DJ Smith’s Contract (Dadonov to Vegas, Del Zotto Signs)

(UPDATE 2:10 PM)- While the focus of free agent frenzy is usually on NHL rosters, Pierre Dorion has also added a piece for the Belleville Senators. The Senators have signed forward Andrew Agozzino to a one-year, two-way deal. Agozzino had 27 points in 31 AHL games last season.

(UPDATE 1:50 PM)- The Senators have added another depth defenceman, signing UFA Michael Del Zotto to a two-year deal. The Ottawa blueline suddenly looks a little bit crowded with the acquisition of Holden and the signing of Del Zotto.

(UPDATE 11:46 AM)- We have a trade to announce! The Senators have apparently found a new home for Evgenii Dadonov. According to Kevin Weekes, he is heading to the Vegas Golden Knights for defenceman Nick Holden and a 3rd round pick in the 2022 Entry Draft.

Free agent frenzy.

A little later than usual perhaps but every bit as ridiculous. There is just something about a deadline or an official opening that seems to bring out the worst in NHL General Managers.

Entertaining, of course. But it always comes with decisions that end up being mocked for years to come. Yet they just can’t help themselves.

In Ottawa, it’s usually a quiet time of year. Generally thrifty in their approach, the Senators generally prefer to wait it out on the sidelines. And with Eric O’Dell already locked into a KHL contract, their number one target was already off the board.

But that doesn’t mean the Senators are taking the day off completely.

Admitedlly, an extension for the Head Coach was pretty low on the list of potential stories today but it’s a good step forward for the organization.

DJ Smith has done a good job with this young team over the last couple seasons and has things pointed in the right direction. It was abundantly clear throughout last season that he had the attention of the team’s young players and that is going to be key as the Senators navigate the next couple seasons.

DJ Smith is getting a two-year extension on top of his current deal, along with what is being described as a “team option”. The extension comes in at around $1.25 million a season.
