Dorion Looking to Add a Forward

With the start of the NHL regular season now just a couple days away, Sens General Manager Pierre Dorion is on a little bit of a whirlwind media tour.

And the more Dorion talks, the more the rumour mill churns.

The Ottawa Senators are actively looking to add a forward before the start of the season and Dorion seems to think it’s pretty much a coin flip on whether there’s a new player in the fold before the end of the day. Dorion has been in contact with a number of GMs over the last few days and has made it clear that he’d like to add another forward to the mix.

Waivers is the obvious place to go shopping this time of year but a trade is a possibility too.

Yesterday’s waiver wire included a number of interesting names yesterday including Flyers forward Matt Read.  Read is in the final year of his deal, earning $3.5 mil. His offensive production has dropped off a little bit the last couple years but he’s still a legitimate top 9 option.

There are a couple other guys on the wire today that might be of use to the Senators.  We’ll find out if they made a claim around noon today.

You can catch the audio of Dorion’s appearance on TSN 1200 here.

Dorion was pretty careful with his words leaving the door open to both waiver wire and trade acquisitions; depth additions and high-end talent. And by putting it at 49%, it’s entirely possible they don’t do a damn thing.

Buckle up!

-The surprising story that is Alex Formenton continued yesterday as the 18 year old signed his entry level contract with the organization. A 2nd round pick appearing in NHL games the season after being drafted is almost unheard of in today’s NHL so what Formenton has accomplished here is pretty remarkable.  Especially when you consider he was barely even eligible for the 2017 Draft due to his age.  Formenton skated as the extra forward at practice yesterday but both Dorion and Boucher have made it clear they expect him to get into a regular season game at some point. He’ll likely end up back in Junior at some point in the not too distant future but the experience and confidence gained over the last month or so should really help his development going forward.
