Brassard to Undergo Shoulder Surgery

Turns out one of the playoff injuries was a little more serious than the team originally thought.

During a lengthy interview on TSN 1200 this afternoon, Senators General Manager Pierre Dorion revealed that Derick Brassard will require surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.  The expected timeline for his recovery is being set at 4-5 months.

Dorion said the team is hopeful that Brassard will be good to go for the start of the 2017/2018 regular season.

Brassard played in all 19 playoff games including the last couple during which he played through obvious pain, at times struggling to even take faceoffs.

Brassard suffered a serious shoulder injury during his rookie season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and required surgery after a fight with James Neal although it’s not the same shoulder this time around.

Brassard also missed the majority of his final season in the QMJHL with a shoulder injury.

While Brassard’s first regular season in Ottawa wasn’t as productive as he and the team might have liked, he was a reliable player who really proved his worth in the playoffs, scoring some huge goals for the Senators. He was one of Ottawa’s best forwards during their first round series against the Boston Bruins.

And if his playoff performance wasn’t impressive enough, we now know that he played more than 21 minutes in the deciding Game 7 in what must have been incredible pain.

-The off-season news is already starting to trickle in. This morning, the Ottawa Senators announced they have signed 2015 5th round draft pick Christian Jaros to his entry level contract.  Back in December, there was some speculation that Jaros might spend a couple more years in Sweden so having him commit to coming to North America is good news for the organization.  Jaros is a physical defenceman (like, really physical) with some decent offensive abilities. Jaros is a player the Senators organization is extremely high on and a guy that could make an impact in Belleville next season.
