ChirpEd- Day 3 at Sens Development Camp

WRITTEN BY- SensProspects

Editor’s Note- First of all, apologies to SensProspects. He and I joked about the possibility that news might break and bump his article yesterday and that’s exactly what happened. So for those that missed it, you can see his first Development Camp article here.  Mentioned this yesterday but SensProspects really is a must follow both on Twitter and YouTube.  It’s sort of a one stop shop for news, stats and video on all prospects in the organization. And I mean all of them.  Seriously, where else can you find out what Joey Daacord is up to over the summer or what Julius Bergman might bring to the line up in Belleville?  You can follow SensProspects on Twitter here and subscribe to his YouTube channel here. And now, his thoughts on Day 3 of Sens Development Camp.

Sometimes jokes just write themselves. Minutes after a bombshell article was posted claiming that Eugene Melnyk was engaging in ongoing talks to sell the Ottawa Senators, the lights went out.

Yes, a power outage cut arena lights at the Bell Sensplex for nearly an hour on Thursday morning.  With only 90 or so minutes of ice time booked, this was somewhat disappointing for those in attendance. I don’t think many of us had ever watched indoor hockey played by sunlight though, so that’s something to tell the grandkids about one day.

Despite the darkness, most drills pushed on. I’ll keep things brief while recapping today as my viewing opportunities were (literally) limited, and will close out with a look ahead to tomorrow’s scrimmage.

Some quicker thoughts on…

Existing prospects:

Joey Daccord is already the most proficient puck handling goaltender in this organization’s history. He’s a treat to watch with the puck. Thankfully, he was paired with the odds-on goalie of the future, Filip Gustavsson, who was (hopefully) learning a thing or two from Daccord.
-Good to see Alex Formenton looking quite comfortable out there today. He was joking around with invitee and Gloucester Rangers grad Ryan Kuffner during a few drills.
Logan Brown ripped a wrist shot off the bar that shattered a puck. Not something you see every day. He’s got a low-key cannon.

New prospects:

-Much has been written about the USNTDP friendship that’s evident anytime Logan Brown, Brady Tkachuk, and Colin White are out there together. Not far behind is the relationship between Jonny Tychonick and Jacob Bernard-Docker, the team’s 2nd and 3rd choices in the 2018 draft. Lifelong teammates, the pair were inseparable yesterday, standing side-by-side whenever possible. Watching this LD/RD pair at UND will be a treat next season.
-Keep an eye on Brady Tkachuk’s PP usage this coming season, wherever that may be. His off-wing slap shots looked lethal. Otherwise, I’ll be watching to see if the Sens release footage from any of the exit interviews this season as they’ve done in the past. Tkachuk seems so comfortable and relaxed out there at times, surrounded by friends, you wonder if he’d be a little more focused if he’d ended up elsewhere. Could be something management would touch on.

Invitees:

-Not to fabricate a huge hype train, but I am on team Luka Burzan heading into the scrimmage and 3-on-3 tournament – he’s looked great during every drill. Seems like a guy you’d take a flier on with a late draft pick, and then invite the NAHL over-ager (Jakov Novak) to camp, but I’ll defer to the pros. Pending how he looks against competition during the scrimmage and 3-on3, not just in drills, I hope to see him back for September’s rookie tournament.

That’s a wrap on day 3 at dev camp! If you’re staying in town for the long weekend, be sure to check out the annual dev camp scrimmage tonight. Puck drop is at 6:30pm at the Richcraft Sensplex in Gloucester.

5 players I’ll be keeping an eye on during the scrimmage:

#38 – Luka Burzan (F)
#43 – Jonny Tychonick (D)
#48 – Jacob Bernard-Docker (D)
#49 – Angus Crookshank (F)
#70 – Kevin Mandolese (G)

Thanks again for having me, see you in the comments!
