Shane Prince Wants Out?

Shane Prince Wants Out?

With the NHL trade deadline just over a week away, you can expect that rumours will begin to heat up around the National Hockey League.  And that includes here in the Nation’s Capital where Bryan Murray has made it known he’s willing to trade young prospects for someone that can help the team down the stretch.

Which is why yesterday’s Twitter rumour about Binghamton Senators forward Shane Prince was especially interesting.  Here’s the rumour in question

On the surface it may not look like a whole lot but it almost seemed too random and unprovoked to not at least be partly based on fact.  I did some asking around yesterday and it does seem like there may be something to it.  I can’t imagine he’s too serious about heading to the KHL but the idea of a trade seems to be something he’s open to.  Prince in his second season with the Binghamton Senators and has yet to see any NHL action.  He’s played well down there but with other guys ahead of him on the depth chart, he may be concerned about not getting a chance here in Ottawa.

The Buffalo Sabres seem like a possible fit here especially with Tim Murray calling the shots.  Murray was here in Ottawa when the Senators drafted Prince in the 2nd round of the 2011 Draft.

The Sens and Sabres have been linked in trade talks with Ottawa signifcant interest in Steve Ott and to a lesser extent, Matt Moulson.  Certainly something to keep an eye on leading up to next week’s deadline.

  • The Apostle

There are gonna be a lot of “ifs” in most of these comments.

Shane Prince has proved nothing. Before people start bitching about him never having got a chance they should consider the fact that maybe he isn’t good enough for a chance. It’s not like the Senators never pull up people from Bingo – this year from the forwards we have had Hoffman, Stone, Da Costa, Pageau and Grant who have all seen time with the NHL team. In addition to those 5 who also all played games in 2012-13 you have Dziuryzynski and Daugavins. Does it honestly make sense that Prince is being singled out, isn’t it more likely that he’s just not ready?

So, “if” he is bitching and wanting to leave and we can package him for something that is going to help us I say cut him loose. I’m not a fan of players trying to dictate playing time to the coaches or management. “If” he is causing waves now what does that hold for the future? I’d much rather have players who want to be here.

    • spezzerman

I dont believe this rumour for all the reasons you point out. He cant be that stupid to think he earned anything yet.

      • Tooks

All about the $$$, that KHL contract is probably double or triple what he currently makes or would ever make in the NHL.

        • NickofTime

I agree, I also think it’s all about the money, it’s quite likely that he won’t be playing in Ottawa anytime soon since Ottawa has a very young team & there are a significant number of players ahead of him. If he can get a better pay cheque in the KHL good luck to him. Who would want him in a trade if he has intentions of going to Russia? IMO Petersson is in the same boat & will likely play in Europe next season.

    • Miguel

ok so all these kids who have put in some signifcant time in the AHL
      Prince
      Peterson
      Hoffman
      SDC
      with some decent success,
had better all SHUT UP and bide your time
while an undrafted, terrible trade acquistion CC89, keep playing while producing squat!
Or a terrible contract player in Greening keep playing while producing squat.
Sorry but at some point, you have to say that ” the player is what he is”, and time to give someone else who has deserved a shot a chance.
Heck Peterson is a much better player than CC89, and we will lose him for good at the end of this season without ever giving him one shot.
As a fan I feel sometimes we are subjected weaker players, due to other circumstances. IMO only

      • A-Train

Those “other circumstances” are real though. Things like 1-way contracts, salary dollars and investments made in those players (valuable assets traded for them etc).

      • Jacques

You can add Condra Miguel! hope we let this ship sail in the spring.

      • Floridasensfan

        Petersson was traded, no

    • Tooks

Cowen did the same in his holdout, we gave in, now were fucked with his overpaid contract non producing ass.

      • Sensnation

Ya totally fucked with a top 4 dman for years to come. Cowen signs and we all know he’s going to be overpaid for the first 2-3 years in exchange for saving long term. Now all of a sudden half a season later we forget this and he’s overpaid crap. Such a sad state of fandom.

        • Jacques

Top 4Dman in Bingo maybe! I agree with Tooks on this one. Apologies, apologies!

    • James0079

Wasn’t Zibenajad drafted in 2011 and he has played way more than 35 NHL games? But I get and agree with your point, he does sound like a spoiled brat (remember Yashin) and he really hasn’t paid his dues yet and to be honest it’s not like he’s lighting it up in Binghamton either. But I’m sure there are more players drafted in 2011 that are playing in the league than you think.

    • James0079

Oh sorry, my mistake. You mean’t the 10 picks taken between 50 and 60th overall. In that case, nevermind my rant lol.

    • Andrews theory

So if your not a fan of players trying to dictate playing time why would you opt to cut him loose if you own his ass?

Kinda sets a precedence don’t ya think?

If Tim Murray is adamant he wants Prince for something we need so be it but trading a young guy just cuz he wants out is a slippery slope for a salary conscious small market team

  • Doc

I just can’t see how Ott or Moulson would be a good fit for us. We have a better version of Ott in Smith, and he’s UFA at the end of the season. Moulson would cost too much and is also a UFA at the end of the season.

And if history is any indication, Murray usually trades for someone no one expected. It is never a rumoured guy. Hopefully that is still the case this year.

    • A-Train

Amen. I’m worried about these rumours. They have the ring of truth. If Steve Ott ends up being awesome for us I’ll happily eat my words….but I just don’t see it.

      • Tooks

Ott would be a force in OTT, lol. Smith is like a poor man’s Ott. Also, Ott can play wing, yes, Doc, he’s played wing before.

    • Tooks

Umm Bobby Ryan was very much rumoured…

    • Charley Rogers was Elvis

Ott and Moulson are both soon to be expensive to resign UFA’s.
Both won’t add a significant amount for the upcoming
scramble for that last playoff spot.

      A solid veteran defensive D-man (think a younger CP04)
is what the team needs the most.

      • The Apostle

Whilst I agree that our need is a the blueline I can see the value of adding a forward but onl;y if they re-sign with us. I would much rather pay Moulson 6 million a year than Michalek 5 million for instance.

  • spezzerman

We dont have problems scoring goals, we have problems preventing them. dont get the obsession for an additional forward when a top 4 d would help us most right now. Erhoff the only player from Buffalo Id be interested that would be realistic.

    • MethotToMyMadness

Ehrhoff would be a great top 4 D with Ottawa. But he is also considered an offensive D, not Defensive, in the sense of keeping goals out. Mind you, if he’s holding the puck more often than not, there is less overall chance of the opposition taking shots, which should mean less goals.
But the same would hold true for a defensive minded forward. If we have the right mix of forwards up front, that could help maintain continued puck pressure in the offensive zone, that would also lead to less shots against. It really depends how you break it down.

      • spezzerman

IMO we are allowing more goals because we cant clear the zone cleanly, Erhoff would help that. I dont think a purely defensive dman is the answer. And, we have 4 of those guys already back there. He would be a great partner for Karlsson, IMO. or on the second pairing and allow Methot to get back with Karlsson.

  • Dirk-Diggler

    To Buff:
    - Prince, Wiercoch, Greening and 2015 2nd

    To Ott:
    - Ehrhoff, Ott

    • laffin681021

      I would do that.

  • OverMind

Ott? odd… now stafford i think is worth tossing a couple extra prospects at.

  • MethotToMyMadness

If the Prince rumor is true, it’s kind of sad. For such a young guy to make those statements, it doesn’t usually go over well with the organization. We’ve seen it before and it’s never a good thing. If a team is interested, it would be a good time to package him up and get something of value that can help now.

I think Ott is the best suited forward for the Sens out of the players available from Buffalo. Go get him Murray! He will be an immediate impact to the roster, with his style of play. You can never have enough of those types of players.

Was watching TSN this morning and they’re already posting projections on the 2018 Olympic roster for Canada. As much fun as we all have with it, give it a break for at least 2 years, 3 max. You can’t be putting guys like Bernier and Rielly on the list just yet, they haven’t proved anything at this point. And personally, I think Ryan Murray would be a better projection than Rielly, but it will take the 2 or 3 years before we know for sure.

    • Doc

I can’t see how you think Ott would make an impact. He hasn’t done much in Buffalo this year, and he’s a center which we don’t need.

Smith has more points and plays the same style of hockey. No thanks.

      • MethotToMyMadness

He’s a Center that can easily switch to the Wing, he’s done this many times and he’s been successful at it. He has chemistry with Spezza dating back to junior and he’s one of the best FO guys in the league. We can also add that he’s a very well known pest, will block shots, take more than one for his team and is great at doing it. Those kinda guys fit well on a team trying to find an identity. He isn’t surrounded with anyone in Buffalo, but they obviously think enough of him to make him captain. But it’s hard to Captain a sinking ship. That’s saying something.

  • MethotToMyMadness

And I have to post something else off topic of the Sens talk. On TSN, they are going on about Price and how stellar he was. I do agree he played great, made some very timely saves. Only allowing 3 goals in 5 games has to be some type of record.
As good as Price was, does anyone else think we may have gotten the same performance out of Luongo if he stayed between the pipes? Or even Smith? I just think the Team Price had in front of him this year, was by far one of the best we’ve seen defensively. They would have made Dubnyk look good.

    • spezzerman

I’m not convinced “anyone” could make the saves he did in OT against Finland. We only beat US 1-0 in the Semi’s and he made 31 saves to get that shutout. It’s ok to admit Price is a very good goalie.

      • MethotToMyMadness

I admit he’s good, probably one of the most calm goalies between the pipes we’ve seen since Brodeur. I just had to ask the question, because I did think Luongo (who I like less than Price) played very well in his 1 game.

      • Zelle

I like them both and knew that they would be good for Canada in goal. I think either or, Canadians would have been proud. Both goalies have records of stealing games.

    • Sandy

Well he certainly won’t be playing in back of the same defense in Mtl that he had in the Olympics.

    • Zelle

Lou played one game and got the shutout. Looked very steady and confident in net. I have no doubts that he would have had an equally stellar performance.

      • MethotToMyMadness

        I agree

  • boom

If the rumours are true around Prince, he will need to add ss to end of his name.

    • aegiszx

Really funny how people are ragging on Prince. Does it really bother you guys so much that a YOUNG hockey player is confident, and wants to take his career into his own hands?

Same crowd that hates Ovi’s celebrations, Evander Kane’s attitude, and Jeff Carter’s partying, I guess. They can’t all be good ol’ typical down to earth Canadian boys.

      • spezzerman

        Especially when they are American.

If he is pissed that better players who have put in more time are getting called up before him and making threats, he deserves the criticism.

I personally dont believe for a second these twitter rumours

      • boom

As far as Prince is concerned. I don’t think the rumours are true. Hence, the “If”..

As far as the other players you mention are concerned, I have no idea how my “ragging” on Prince has to do with them?

I have no problem with confidence. I do, however, have a problem with (assumed) entitlement.

    • spezzerman

hahaha, yep. They should trade him to Detroit where he wont go anywhere for another 3 years, with the way they bring up prospects. That would teach him. If I were Prince I would be encouraged by the amount of call ups the Sens use. They obviously dont mind giving call ups chances, and MacLean has used call ups in the playoffs before. the grass is not always greener

  • SenaTHOR

I haven’t seen Prince play this year but he needs to understand the “Draft Position Preference Phenomena”. Murray is a stickler for giving his high draft picks or major signings every opportunity to succeed(or fail). The rest have to wait until there is an injury or something. Case in point was Gryba vs Wiercioch. Wiercioch has never outplayed Gryba in the AHL in a 200ft game and being a higher pick of Murray was brought up much earlier. Grant came up and played well but who gets the call ups? Decosta a major college signing gets called up ahead of other deserving players.
Where is the Best Players Play mantra? It is presently the high draft picks or signings play while the rest need to wait in the AHL. Unfortunately Hoffman had to wait for his low pick opportunity. He has earned it.
For those who may disagree why the F@#k is Cowen still playing regularly.

    • The Apostle

I look forward to Brian Lee and Jim O’Brien proving you right.

      • SenaTHOR

        Neither drafted by Murray’s staff.

      • Miguel

neither were Murrays picks, hence why they are where they are now

        • The Apostle

The primary reason Lee and O’Brien are where they are is because neither of them are very good.

Although I agree that there is a tendency to go to the higher picked players first that’s normally because the higher picked players are better – that’s why they were picked there.

    • TookieIs100PercentRight

Cowen is playing both because he was a high pick and Murray wants to justify his pick and also because he got a massive deal and Murray would look dumb sitting him or sending him down. The die is cast, we have to live with the plodding dude for the foreseeable future.
      TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!

      • The Apostle

Agreed. I think the contract is the significant factor with Cowen, not the draft pick.

      • Sensnation

This broken record keeps getting airtime. At some point you’d hope one would find a new song. Cowen gets icetime because he’s growing into what he will become and this is the best way to do. Keep doubting him all you want, gonna stick with the management on this one.

        • Jacques

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, Cowen has been terrible, you need glasses. You were blaming Karlsson for Cowen’s bad play, who was named best D man at the Olympics? Cowen is never going to be stellar cuz he can’t skate.

  • senate19

    Nashville – Patric Hornqvist
    NJ – Michael Ryder
    Rangers – Carl Hagelin

Wonder if BM will go off the radar and try to grab one of these guys

    • CohMa

I’d be all for Hornqvist or Hagelin. IMO Hagelin was probably the only Swede that looked good in the Olympic final.

    • Miguel

Hornqvist and Hagelin would be great picks

    • Richard Gough

I like Hornqvist I think I could fit well on the 2nd line

    • sprucesens

hagelin won’t be going anywhere. Nashville needs more scoring, not less, so we’d have to give scoring back somehow. nash is more likely to deal D.

  • Miguel

We all know that BM is a hockey genius, and we all understand his hands are tied with an internal budget, so he does amazingly well with what he has,
However we all know no on is perfect.
His one impection, that we all know to be very evident in Ottawa is that he is loyal to a fault to a) his top picks b) his trade picks c) his bad contracts
I as a fan hate to watch bad players continue to get icetime, and never miss a shift, while better players, due to a) not a BM pick or a lower pick b) traded for by BM c) lower 2 way contract: continue to be pushed down the lineup, when they are clearly a better player.
The obvious examples right now are
Cowen and over Gyrba or PW
Conacher and Greening over SDC, Hoffman, Peterson, Prince, Stone
This has been going on for many years, and I for one would rather we put our money where our mouth is and
“BEST PLAYER PLAY” and if we do, I say we make the playoffs

    • senate19

w/ all due respect, “Best players play” manages the physical aspect of the game. How you treat people probably matters just as much, if not more, and team reputation goes a long way. I’m sure BM weighs these decisions out carefully.

      • Miguel

really? sorry I disagree would you go to a game if were 0 and 82?
Success is measured by wins and losses, if we continue to lose, but we are loyal to bad players, I am certain you could only support this to a certain degree

        • Sensnation

Year 3 of a known rebuild is not really the time to act like we’re 0-82 and have been losing like the Oilers for decades.

        • senate19

Well, in my opinion I think there has to be a balance, of course. There may be more merit to playing the best players, because a “winning” environment will also be attractive to UFAs, but I guess I just think there has to be some room for the players’ emotions.

Maybe BM just has too much pride though – I’m not sure, I guess.

          • The Apostle

I think there is a possibility that Murray, Dorion, Lee, MacLean, Cameron, Reeds and Richardson know more about our players than The Apostle, Miguel, Tooks, Hax, Sensnation and Spezzerman.
            U

          • Doc

            Pretty much agree.

senate19 has a point too, you need to do right by your Vets. Things like this go a long way in the hockey world.

            Balance is key.

        • The Apostle

There are no games to go to if we have an 0-82 record. The season’s over.

          • Miguel

agreed, last year was impressive, but this year we have digressed, and I am tired of seeing some of the players continue to get ice time regardless of their results.
4 years for some of our pospectst to be buried in the minors and barely get a sniff, is a bit narrow minded.
Peterson has never been called up, and like I said he is better than Conacher is… IMO

      • Tooks

Pretty sure how you treat people doesnt mean shit, yeah your stars ok but the rest…Look at how CHI, BOS, DET, PIT, TB have let key pieces go (after winning Cups) without hesitation. Its a business, Owners and GM’s are not in it to make friends. Follow the BOS, CHI, DET, PIT way and we”ll do fine.

The only way to make Ottawa a player friendly place to play is winning. Our only Cup final was with 2 apparent cancers in our room…

    • Sensnation

Completely disagree Miguel. You’ve always disagreed with that portion of how BM manages the team and I believe it has more to do with the fact you don’t have all the information he does, and he’s not explaining it to you directly. Most of the players who are playing over others justly deserve it, whether it be for current performance, or future potential.

      • Miguel

how do you know if Peterson is better than Conacher?
Or is Stone/SDC better than Greening?
I can go out on a limb and say Peterson is, but we will never know that will we?
No one can deny that BM at times is stubborn with “his own” players.
Whereas we have seen many other teams give up on obvious management screw ups
ie Kaberle in MTL or Finger/Komiserik in TO
Manager do screw up, but never in Ottawa it seems.

        • Sensnation

Miguel, BM runs the team realizing players take time to develop and using the natural order of how sports goes. You see a hot prospect in the AHL and think he’s the solution. It’ll all work itself out in due time.

          • Zelle

So true. Look what bringing young players did in Edmonton. A whole lot of nothing and now the younger kids on the team have reoccurring injuries and some bad habits. I’d prefer they take their time. If I was 21 and looking at a potential half mil or more a year if I just waited a year or two, I’d do it. If he is too impatient to wait, if he worth hanging on to? It’s not like he’s approaching 30…

          • Jacques

Oh yeah maybe Miguel and I would rather expedite the procedure! You want to take the 100 year recipe to winning!

      • Jacques

What malarkey! I agree with Miguel, Condra, Greening, Conacher?…. There are better players in Bingo, that’s why a guy like Prince sees those slugs in the big leagues and gets frustrated! I would too if I were him!

    • The Apostle

2 way contracts are given to players who haven’t yet earned or aren’t eligible for a 1 way deal. Therefore it’s to be expected that they get the shorter end of the stick. I’m not going to try to defend Cowen never sitting, but none of the forwards you mention have made a definitive case for leaping over anybody with a 1 way deal.

  • Simple Jack

if true this sucks, we gave up Mike Fisher to draft Prince. being a ’67 player in ottawa i would think that he would want to play in ottawa.

maybe we are over thinking it and prince does not want to be moved, but he wants a shot.

if that is the case i can see where he’s coming from, hoffman is a great ahl-er, but he cant do anything in the nhl so far. ceci got a shot and he is one of our best dmen right now, i think prince thinks he can do the same as ceci and skip stone, hoffman, pageau…

    • Dirk-Diggler

I thought we got Noosen for Fisher? Was it a 1st (Noosen) and a 2nd (Prince)?

      • Doc

I know it wasn’t on purpose, but you made me laugh with how you wrote Noesen lol.

Had a hard time pronouncing his name at first, but was told it’s like ‘Nay-sen’.

    • The Apostle

Prince was picked with the pick we got for Kelly.

  • Sensnation

Thanks for elaborating Chirp. I still feel like Prince is a prospect worth keeping for the Sens. They’ve been concentrating on local talent, and he definitely fits that bill. Seems to have the skill as well. I would much rather part with Conacher and others, as Prince’s timeline to the NHL lines up with our big veteran exodus.

    • Tooks

      He’s not Local…He’s from NY…

      • Sensnation

        67s Tooks, that’s local.

        • Tooks

Yes it is but the Sens didnt draft the 67′s now did they. Prince is not a local talent. Hence why he would prefer to go play in NY somewhere.

          • Sensnation

Look up the word local. I didn’t say he was born here. The management is making a concerted effort to get some players the local fanbase have some familiarity or attachment to. A lot of Sens fans are 67s fans too, and thus know and appreciate Prince due to his local exposure.

      • Deadly

In a world like this,New York is local. we must draw fans from the State of NY.

  • RUSH RLZ

So… what is the value of THIS guy as a blueline partner for EK65? OEL…

    http://www.capgeek.com/player/1755

That and a changing of the guard of Michalek for Evander Kane would be costly… but sweeet.

    • Sensnation

OEL would cost an arm, a leg, and your winter coat during a snow storm. That’s before paying him 5.5mil a year.

    • Dirk-Diggler

It would be a lot going the other way… but it would be worth it…

I’d think it would cost one of Zibanejad/Lazar + Cowen + goalie prospect…

  • Millennium

You could read this situation (IF true) in couple different ways:

1.) Prince is at odds with our organization and will look at every option, even KHL, to get out of our system.

2.) Prince is young/arrogant/impetuous and thinks he’s ready now and isn’t willing to wait for his shot.

3.) The organization has told him, or implied, that he won’t get a shot any time in the near future, so better to get out now while his stock is high.

4.) Prince is young and gullible and listens to agents/yes men/ hype men too much and legitimately thinks this is the right career move.

Could easily be a bit from all of them.

    • Sensnation

Could also be an overblown rumor. Let’s not start acting like Prince has an attitude problem because of 1 random tweet.

      • Millennium

As qualified in the post, I said “if true”. And I’m not suggesting he has any attitude problem. I’m merely summarizing potential scenarios IF this rumour was true.

        • Sensnation

Yes I know, but I think there are other options. Maybe he mentioned why he hasn’t got a shot and then just quoted that he’s been called by KHL teams. There could be some truth to the story without him being the bad guy.

          • Millennium

Right, and only one of my list has him being the ‘villain’ at all. And obviously there could be a dozen more, and better, reasons than the ones I listed there.

          • Sensnation

Seems like 1, 2, 4 all make him out to be some sort of a chump. All good though, was just saying let’s not vilify the kid because of some random tweet.

          • Millennium

            100% agree on that sentiment.

          • Tooks

Except its not just some random tweet, SC confirmed that it has some value and the guy who tweeted looks like he’s a legit sports writer for NY based teams/NCAA. Something IS up with Prince, the Sabres and Ottawa. Not sure about the KHL part but tho but its probably $$$ up the wazooo!

          • Sensnation

I agree that he could want a better shot, it’s only natural in his position. Not sure it’s at the point that he’s holding the team hostage. I truly believe in his skill though, and hope the Sens instead find room for him. I expected he’d be fighting for a spot next camp anyways.

      • Deadly

When it gets to the level of Turris in Phoenix then we will know for sure.

    • Deadly

      Or..it is unsubstantiated crap.

I’m feeling for Prince right now. Prince still has a year left on his contract. I’m not great with rules that govern these things, but I think he can not (or at the very least is not suppose to) sign any new contracts until he plays out his old one. If he’s already getting interest from the KHL (which would presumably include a pretty decent contract), why is everybody lynching the guy for keeping this open as a possibility? I would totally get the criticism is he jumps ship before his contract expires. But, if he were to stay buried in the AHL up to that point, why is it wrong for him to seriously consider this as an option?

    • sprucesens

I made a random suggestion yesterday, that it could be “artificial” rumours, so when the sens deal him, the fanbase doesn’t erupt, and kind of saw it coming. Probably has some minor ground to it, and then they just put it out there as some unsubstantiated rumour, then when the trade goes down, even though nobody knows for sure, there is that seed of doubt that he may have wanted out. Then less people are upset about the fact that they were excited for this prospect.
….or I’ve been watching too much tv. lol.

      • RUSH RLZ

Our organization has too much class to pull a stunt like that, except for Melnyk, who lacks the brains.

        • sprucesens

one would hope so. but big business is big business. they are all underhanded or doing something that is unethical, yet helps the business. Any way they can get ahead and keep a positive image, they’ll dig deep and play dirty if they have to. They would just claim to have no connection to the source, and the source would claim the same. Regardless, the info would be out, and it would be up to everyone to speculate on what was, or wasn’t said.
Not very likely, but in this world, I wouldn’t doubt that kind of thing happening.

      • Aaron 2.0

It would seem a little strange for the organization to quietly leak that Prince might be a flight risk though. Won’t this reduce his trade value?

        • sprucesens

yeah, very true on the khl part. it was more of me just pandering up random ideas on it. very strange to hear of a prospect who has barely played in the ahl yet, to be trying to leave to KHL, especially when they aren’t Russian.

  • esk

“The Sens have interest in acquiring BOTH Steve Ott and Matt Moulson from Buffalo…” EKLUND.

    • Sensnation

Not really news. We’ve known this for about a month now. It’s quite likely we’re in on these two till the very end.

      • esk

        Yes i’m obviously
aware of that. I thought it was one or the other but Eklund is saying the sens
want to ACQUIRE BOTH ott and Moulson. Sounds like new information to me but its
Eklund and probably not reliable. Just thought i would put it out there..

        • Tooks

1 or both, I would be happy either way. Upgrades over what we currently got.

        • Sensnation

There’s potential of a forward or two going back if it’s both, but Ott represents the grinder and Moulson the skill BM wants to add to the top 6-9.

          • RUSH RLZ

This is the problem though, the last thing we need is a top 6-9, unless of course someone else is traded away…

          • Sensnation

I could see Conacher being moved, as it would be mutually beneficial.

          • Tooks

Ott is an upgrade over Smith/Greening and Moulson is an upgrade over MM9/CC89.

          • Sensnation

Agreed Tooks. I’m not sure we’ll get to re-sign Moulson though, so I’d hope we’re not giving up too much. Would rather let some young guys get more icetime this year if that’s the case. I like Ott over Conacher personally, and after that anything is gravy over the others you mention.

          • Doc

Again, you’re missing the point. Both are rentals and we’re not competing for the cup.

            Bad trades.

          • Tooks

Sorry but there will be 16 teams competing for the Cup. We intend to be one of them, what kind of fan are you?

Its not like we would be giving up anything of our future to acquire Moulson or Ott or anyone from BUF.

          • Doc

Hahaha now I know you’re delusional.

If you think Moulson and/or Ott makes us a legit contender you’re either drunk or on really good meds.

          • Sandy

Agreed… two UFA’s at the end of this season who could walk after giving up the cost to get them?
Bad trade it would be… unless they re-sign..
I would also hate to see Bingo torn apart for rentals when they have a very good chance at a long playoff run…

  • FBP

    So Prince for Ott then?

  • Tooks

    Ken Warren @Citizenkwarren
Murray says he could deal other prospects if the return is good enough

I guess Doc will call BS on this too…

    • Sensnation

Murray’s been open to dealing prospects for sure.

We know Lazar, Lehner, Turris and Karlsson are untouchable. Sounds like Ceci and possibly Cowen are too.

Spezza has a No Trade Clause, MacArthur has a NMovementC, Neil a limited NTC, and Phillips has a limited NTC as well.

Beyond that I’d say anyone is up for trade, with Ryan, Zibanejad, Anderson and Puempel requiring a very good return.

      • RUSH RLZ

Ryan is an untouchable right now, unless he helped bring back the likes of Stamkos or something… he has been solid here, he is one of our few bonafide Top 6 and fans still see him as the “lost Aflie got Ryan” guy.

        • Sensnation

If he’s willing to re-sign, yes. We don’t know yet though. And if he could bring back a true top 3, I think Murray would consider it. Just my opinion, but I get what you’re saying and where it’s coming from.

    • Doc

You do realise the two are not related, right? Yeah…doubt it.

I called BS on the Prince rumour to KHL, little one. Get it right.

      • Tooks

Funny that most people would like to have Ott or Moulson or anyone on that list in Ottawa. They are upgrades to what we currently have.

Are you just playing stupid or are you really against making this team better?

        • Doc

          Ha! That’s cute.

You’re either really dense or just trolling as usual. I’ll say it one last time reeeeeeal slow for you snookie:

Those. Guys. Are. Rentals. Get it now?

Even if they make the team better in the short term, what happens when they walk away in July? Gave away assets for a few weeks of ‘better’ hockey for what? You think these guys will make us contenders?

  • thepez

If you listen to Murray’s interview he says that he prefers in trading for someone who will re-sign or has term remaining. Drew Stafford could be that guy if there is a deal with Buffalo. Personally a rental like Moulson who will cost quite a bit just does not make sense.

    • Doc

      Good god I hope so.

      • Jeremiah

what about Lehner+Cowen+Borowiecki for MIller? Then a miller/anderson tandem for the season. Could be deadly.

        • sprucesens

          horrible idea

    • The Apostle

There isn’t a rental out there who turns us into a cup contender on his own so I don’t see the point of going for one. I agree with Murray’s stance, if we are going to bring in somebody before the trade deadline I want it to be somebody who helps us for more than 3 months.

      • Inquiring Mind

        Ryan Miller ?

        • The Apostle

Not a significant enough upgrade on the Anderson/Lehner tandem for my money. Plus I hate Ryan Miller – which I accept might be clouding my judgement somewhat.

      • Doc

        Agreed.

That’s what I don’t get. Most trade proposals are giving away assets for rentals. It’s idiotic.

People want a trade just for the sake of it.

        • Tooks

Sorry to inform you but Prince, Da Costa and Hoffman probably dont have a future with the Sens.

Greening or Condra or even CC89 and MM9 leaving would not hurt this team one bit.

Especially if you get Ott/Moulson/Stafford/Ehrhoff in return.
So what Godly assests are you referring to that we cant possibly give up?

          • sprucesens

I hope Hoffman has a future on the team. or prince. Both could be solid scoring wingers anywhere in the top 9. And I would consider both of them upgrades over the 4 you listed (greening, condra, cc89 and mm9)

          • Doc

What’s your crush with these rentals? Why give away assets for guys who probably won’t stay here in the summer. You’re basically giving our assets away for nothing.

Package them with a roster player or two to get a better player with term left. This is not rocket science.

          • Tooks

I didnt know a better shot at the Cup was frowned upon here?

Especially for assets that wont be here for the future. Its all about the Cup. When we make the playoffs, those assets arent going to help. So why not unload them for players that can.

      • RUSH RLZ

EXACTLY. Go big or go home. Bring us a great player to help this season, next season, the season after…. or don’t bother at all unless a very small deal for really short term help.

  • Godless_Lawyer

I think guys in Prince’s situation are constantly jockeying to try to get on the call up radar, so that’s really not a surprise. The surprise is that it becomes a rumour out of nowhere – I suspect it wouldn’t get out there unless the club was also looking at Prince as potential trade-bait or someone else would like them to. A little rare to have a Ottawa/Bingo rumour break out of Rochester, no?

    • Tooks

Not at all, considering Prince is from Rochester NY…

  • Miguel

I do not want a trade just for a rental purpost or just for the sake of a trade,
what I do want is to free up some bodies to make room for some prospects who have paid their due in the AHL finally get their shot. Interesting how some “pets” don’t pay as much as other players have to pay
this is a list of AHL games for some prospects and the first list is with a season of lockout where these players had no where else to play
    Condra 135
    Greening 59
    Conacher 130 AHL games
    as apposed to some others:
    Hoffman 250
    SDC 150
Peterson 125 with 2 season in the SEL
    And still counting!
When is enough… enough? Can you blame if a guy like Hoffman asked to be moved?
Free up some dead wood and givesome of these guys a look before we are forced to move them.
    IMO only of course

    • thepez

What’s the rush? The Red Wings are notorious for keeping guys in the minors.
Thomas Tatar – 265 games in the AHL, Gustav Nyquist – 122, Brendan Smith – 150.
As Pierre McGuire says, get them over ripe. Hoffman has not shown that he belongs in the NHL. Did he get a fair shot, probably not. You can say the same thing about Corey Locke and hundreds of others.

  • lbernier

I have not given up on Conacher yet, he is having a softmore slump kind of year, but he is such a hard worker on the ice and definitely not a liability, so wait to see what he does to finish the season and next year before you make any decisions with him. He is a very good player he has all the tools except size

    • Sensnation

… and finish. He’s a really good top 9 on teams without depth.

  • Sandy

I would hate to give up on Prince before he even plays an NHL game.. You really don’t know what you have until they play…

    • Miguel

precisely! We know what we have in Greening, Conacher, Phillips, and although I hope there is more to him maybe even Cowen,
And I believe that there are some now in Bingo that could help us now,
ie Ceci, is easily in our top 4

  • A-Train

I wonder if Tim Murray likes Conacher? Bryan seemed pretty blah about that trade even on the day it was made and I remember his comments coming off as though he had needed to be sold on the deal by someone internally.

Just a little Tuesday afternoon speculation….

  • Josh

What about St. Louis? If he wants out and most likely to a Canadian market he’d be a pretty sweet fit in Ottawa.

    • Doc

Heard that he would only accept a trade to NY.

    • Deadly

Ten years ago maybe but not really now.

  • CUP 2014-15

Just a thought but there really isn’t a deal I like with Buff and St.L doesn’t want to sell the farm for Miller and we can’t help the Blues this year even if we would like Stewart. Could BM be working on sending two prospects to Buff, get Stewart from the Blues and the Blues send a first to Buff. Something like this makes more sense to me with Buff or maybe its just wishful thinking.

  • iKarly65

    Moulson’s stats with Buffalo are: 40 games 9 Goals 15 assists 24 points -10

    • Tooks

Have you seen MM9′s stats? or even Zib’s? As bad and they play on a better team.

Moulson had 9pts in 11 games with NYI. You think he’s motivated after being shipped to the last place team in the League. his previous years with NYI speak for themselves, 2nd to only JT every year.

  • Dmare085

curtis glencross would be a great addition. very low radar kind of player.

  • FBP

    How about Cowen for Girardi?

    • Andrews theory

      All day every day!

      • Tooks

No kidding, would do that all week and twice on Sundays. Problem is NYR would never do that. would have to sweeten the pot a bit.

  • SensFanInMTL

Kid hasn’t played a game in the NHL yet and he’s already pulling the ol’ Heatley routine eh? Let’s ship him off to Anaheim with Borowiecki and get Noesen back lol.

  • thepez

If posters continue to insist on Cowen being traded can it be for someone good and not a UFA who will bolt? I think trading Cowen is ridiculous but I’ll bite.

The Blues need a goalie. Robin Lehner is ready to be the #1. What about Craig Anderson and yes Cowen plus a prospect from Bingo to St.Louis for Kevin Shattenkirk and Brian Elliott? Doubt it would ever happen but it’s an out of the box type of deal.

    • Tooks

Its a good start but I think the Blues goalies are as good/better than Anderson, not sure sending them Andy would open up talks for Shattenkirk, guy is a beauty! Would be a great trade for Ottawa thats for sure.

  • Andrews theory

First off, a lot people jumping the gun here and passing judgment on a pretty amazing kid based on what I’ve seen from him thus far.

As a fan, it’s awesome when this stuff becomes public cuz it gives us something to discuss but as a player or organization this stuff should never get out…

If Tim Murray is adamant he wants Prince for something we need so be it but trading a young guy just cuz he wants out is a slippery slope for a salary conscious small market team.

Prince looks like he’ll be a boom or bust player based on his skill set and I’d be willing to bet that he develops into a legit top 6 player in a few years time.

    • Deadly

A few years time ? Is he willing to wait and work towards that goal ?

      • Andrews theory

He’s 21, I think he’ll break into the league next year as a third liner and work his way up….

    • Tooks

According to most Sens fans, ALL our prospects will turn out to be legit NHL’ers if a few years time, lol. To think of trading them is not even an option, unless we get Crosby back. Gotta love blind faith.

  • Andrews theory

The hate on for Conacher is extremely premature…

Should we have moved Anderson instead? Ya probably but that isn’t Conachers fault

  • SensChirp

A question to the readers- Do any of you visit sites that publish “sponsored posts”? Got an offer to post one the other day and while the payout was quite impressive, I worried about the reaction of readers.

Is this common on the sites you frequent?

    • Mitchell

Heck another post another read! And if it helps your pockets chirp I’ll read twice!

    • CUP 2014-15

Honestly, it would depend. There are a ton of blogs and only a handful worth going to daily. Yours, I will not miss due to both your insightful blogs of interest and well written to boot. secondly is your collection of followers. Would this mean an end to SC as it is (if it aint broke…..) Change can be good or bad. Good luck but if you get offered something more then you would expect, I advise you revisit what your selling as anything that makes you go hmmmmmm in the buss world will bite you in the ass more often then not when you think you just got the lions share.

      • SensChirp

No no. Wasn’t a change to format or the site at all. Just a company that recognized the traffic and solid readership here and wanted to use it to promote a campaign of theirs.
In the end decided it was a little too “unrelated” to the content we have here and I passed. Was confident with the decision I made but just curious if other sites were going down this path.

    • sprucesens

i guess we would have to know what “sponsored” posts means.

      • SensChirp

A good question- Without getting into too much detail it was a company that was a looking to promote an ad campaign they were running. Quite “unrelated” to the focus of this blog though so I had to pass.

        • sprucesens

i personally still don’t see what you actually mean, but if you passed, i guess it doesn’t much matter. I think we would all be fine with you making more money, as long as the content and comment section stay fully available as they are, without cluttering stuff up too much

          • SensChirp

Would have just been one post, completely off topic. Something about a cruise line, I think. But they wanted a full post, on the home page and as the lead post. Good visibility and helps them get the name of their campaign higher in Google rankings.

I think Google generally frowns upon that sort of thing anyway and it certainly would have confused the heck out of people around here.

          • Godeater

Ahhhh yeah Chirp, I know that industry inside and out, it’s a dying breed, actually seen as dirty / unethical by Google, paid links. They would write some post about their stuff, link back to their site using link text such as “cheap cruises”, which bolsters their search rankings because your site has some decent clout (actually called domain authority or siterank in Google terms). Best to steer clear, I’m a bit surprised anyone approached you for that nowadays actually, and to be perfectly honest, unless payment was up front I would suspect that you might have issues getting your $$$ when it was over. Long time fan of the site, and I’m an online marketing + search guru, if you ever have questions about that stuff I am happy to provide free advice/guidance.

          • RUSH RLZ

^—- this is “me” by the way, I guess I was logged into Disqus from another site.

    • Yukon Cornelius

I have to say that this is totally one of the reasons I like this blog so much, Chirp. You are a genuinely good person who cares about his blog and those frequent it. Just the fact that you decided to ask the community goes to show how considerate you are.

If you chose to have sponsored posts I trust that your judgement especially if it puts a little bit of cash into the pocket of someone with a newborn child I would feel bad objecting to it. You dedicate so much to this site that you totally deserve a little kickback.

Keep up the good work, I for one trust your judgement. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication.

    • Miguel

you have completely earned the trust and respect of your readers, so anything you feel benefits you or the site, as long as you maintain the valuable content, and keep the interest of the quality posters, you will have no issues from this loyal follower. Keep up the great work Chirp!
And lets have a great ride to the playoffs
      Go Sens Go!!!

  • Hax

Good that he wants to make the NHL bad enough he’s not sitting quiet. But too bad that this will probably drop him down the depth chart a bit since the org won’t want to look like they’re just giving in to a threat.

Looking on Capgeek for next year BM has to make a move for a top 6 player minimum, assuming Michalek walks season end.
Anything BM can get for Phillips Michalek Corvo would be something, even late picks.
Right now we have no #1 pick so who do we give up to get a superstar or are we going to overpay in free agency, at least a few picks in a trade is something to offer.

  • sprucesens

interesting, was just reading an article. it said bobby ryan missed practice because of an injury. It mentioned about how if he had made the US team he probably would have played through it. My thoughts are that if he’s still injured enough to miss practice, i’m super glad he didn’t get picked. Also, hope that’s why his production had fallen a bit as of late. Hopefully he and everyone else is fully rested and rarin to go!

Can’t wait for sunday’s game. Spending around 1500 bucks just to go see them!! hopefully they actually show up for an afternoon game for once!

    • Senator-Stanley

Heading out Friday morning for the game!
Like you I hope it’s a good game and worth the travel to Vancouver.
It’s been a while since I was in Vancouver.
Hoping to Ski at Whistler on Saturday and watch the game on Sunday.
      Go Sens Go!

    • Kohlmanator

      Quote from Rotoworld:

As expected, Bobby Ryan took part in Monday’s practice and he said his
nagging injury felt fine. “I should be good to go from here on out,” he
      said. Ryan, who was
snubbed by Team USA’s selection committee for the Winter Olympics, got
engaged during the break. He admitted that he had some mixed emotions
for the American squad during the Sochi Games, but in the end he did
want to see them do better than they did with their fourth place finish.

It’s unfortunate that there’s not much promo going on for the outdoor game… It’s the last one of the season right? That may have done it more harm than good. If you run down the list, on paper while its a big deal for the two clubs, for the NHL it’s not as big as the lead up:
    - Winter Classic – Wings/Leafs, Original 6 Team, once again in the same division
    - Stadium Series – First outdoor game in the sun, in the dessert (pretty cool)… first time all 3 NY teams meet on the island, outdoor (also pretty neat)…
    - Olympics have just ended with Canada on top.
-Soldiers Field – Top two successful, powerhouse franchises with Toews/Sid facing off less than a week after winning together

Yeah, I can see why no one is really excited for the Heritage Classic :(

    • Tooks

Yeah I could see why this one isnt as much hyped. 2 random teams with no past rivalry, it just seems random. Like they had to add another game and didnt know who to chose?

The other games all had much hype due to who was playing, rivalries, division battles, 1st ever this/that. Ousr is just plain old Heritage Classic.

  • Tooks

Poor DET, they have a slew of injuries and just off the Olympic break they play back to back, lol. Hopefully we can take advantage of that. Not sure I would start Andy. he’s probably drained and not emotionally sound right now.

  • Dirk-Diggler

So Phillips wants a multi year deal!

I think that’s the writing on the wall to trade him for the best return. I mean we have so many young guys coming up that at best Phillips is 6/7 on the depth chart. Why commit the dollars to a guy that doesn’t provide quality minutes for the price he’s being paid?
