Well that’s a weird one.
The Ottawa Senators made a trade this morning, sending goaltender Mike Condon to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Ryan Callahan (‘s contract).
The Senators get a 5th round pick back from the Lightning and send a 6th round pick the other way.
The move allows the Senators to unload Mike Condon’s contract and create some additional flexibility in goal. And save some money in the process.
Ryan Callahan was recently placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) and is unlikely to play again. He has a degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine, and it has been recommended that he quit professional hockey.
“From what the doctors have said and the way I feel, it doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to come back,” Callahan said last month.
Save some cash. Clear the log jam in goal. And upgrade a draft pick (even if it ends up being by one spot).
Like the Anisimov deal, this is probably a fairly easy decision for Pierre Dorion, who has pretty clear marching orders this summer- create opportunities for young players, clear out some dead weight and save as much money as possible.
