It was only a matter of time.
This morning, the Ottawa Senators announced that they have fired Head Coach Dave Cameron. Assistant coaches Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley were also let go. Assistant coach Jason Smith has been offered another position within the organization.
Dave Cameron and his staff are not completely to blame for everything that went wrong with this year’s team but they were certainly part of the problem. Strucuturally, this team seemed lost for most of the year and just couldn’t seem to make any progress over the course of the season. Defensive zone structure. Player deployment. Special teams. Game day preparation. Practice habits.
These were all issues for the Senators this year and while player deserve some of the blame for that, it’s often the Coaches that end up taking the fall.
Now, the pressure shifts to new General Manager Pierre Dorion as he makes the decision on who will be this team’s next Head Coach. It’s so important that the organization gets it right this time around. They need stability behind the bench. A veteran voice with experience is desperately needed.
Pierre Dorion will speak to the media at 12:30 PM.
