When I was ten years old, and all my friends were dreaming about playing in the NHL, my dream was to write about it.
I can’t really remember why that was.
Growing up in a family with five brothers, maybe my hockey career was too expensive to fit in the family budget. Maybe it was because I preferred playing baseball. Or maybe it was because Laurie Boschmann told me I couldn’t skate backwards.
Whatever it was, unlike most Canadian kids that grow dreaming of playing in the NHL and never reach that goal, my aspirations were slightly more attainable.
I knew I was going to watch the Ottawa Senators at every possible opportunity and figured, man it would be great if someone would also pay me to do so.
Life and my career pulled me in another direction but that’s the funny thing about having a dream I guess. You just sort of find a way.
While SensChirp wasn’t technically a thing until 2007 (12 years ago?!), it was actually the summer of 2005 when things really started rolling.
That was when a previously unknown member of the Sportsnet Forums chimed in with a cryptic message. Marian Hossa, a star for the Senators, was going to be traded. To the Atlanta Thrashers. For one of their pending Restricted Free Agents. Either Ilya Kovalchuk or Dany Heatley. It was obviously Heatley but when you’re breaking news two weeks in advance, you have to keep ’em guessing a little bit.
The rest, as they say, is history. Well, blogging history anyway.
What started with one post from Chara03 on a message board more than a decade ago, has evolved into one of the most unique and active sports communities anywhere on the internet.
There are days when I hate this place. And then others when I’m as proud of this website as I am of anything I’ve accomplished in my life. Outside of my kids of course. But that’s all Mrs. Chirp.
This season has been tough.
Scraping together these game day posts in what has basically been five months of meaningless hockey hasn’t been easy. Watching once die hard fans fall out of love with this hockey teams is too. But even in these dark times, it’s nice to have a place like this where we can go through the madness together.
Thanks to all of you for continuing to make SensChirp a part of your hockey watching experience. And thanks for following along this season.
A best guess at the line up for the season finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets
Boedker-Pageau-Veronneau
Duclair-Tierney-Ryan
Tkachuk-White-Gibbons
Smith-Lindberg-Paajarvi
Chabot-DeMelo
Englund-Ceci
Borowiecki-Jaros
Craig Anderson gets the start in goal for Ottawa. Puck drops for the last time on a Sens hockey game at 7:08 PM.
The game is available on Sportsnet 360, unless the poker tournament runs long or on CityTV, just after the Mad About You marathon wraps up.
And now it’s time for your dreams to come true too. For the last time, bask in the beauty of a Head2Head Table.
