Interesting timing considering the latest drama that unfolded in front of City Council earlier today.
Today marks the ten year anniversary of Eugene Melnyk officially taking over control of the Ottawa Senators franchise. The above video comes from the Sens website and was Melnyk's first address as the owner of the hockey team. Crazy to think how far things have come over the past decade.
It sure would be nice if the decisions of Mayor Jim Watson didn't have a direct impact on the future of the Ottawa Senators.
Unfortunately as long as Eugene Melnyk is the Owner, this casino debate will continue to matter for Sens fans. I'm having a hard time formulating a strong opinion on way or the other on this whole debate. That said, I do believe that an open and competitive process makes sensefor all parties involved.
As a hockey fan, it's pretty annoying to see the team used as leverage in all of this. I have a hard time believing that a casino at the Canadian Tire Centre is critical to future of the Ottawa Senators. That said, I do believe that this casino is critical to Melnyk's future with the team.
It will be interesting to see where things go from here. And it's interesting to think where this franchise was just ten years ago.
