Some interesting free agent news to pass along this afternoon as it looks like veteran defenceman Sergei Gonchar may have played his last game as an Ottawa Senator.
Twitter reports suggest that Gonchar has a substantial offer on the table from a team in the KHL and is seriously considering a return home to wrap up his career. The offer is rumoured to be for $7 million a season and is from Metallurg Magnitogorsk, a team coached by former NHL coach Mike Keenan.
With the Olympics coming up in Sochi, the move back to Russia makes sense for Gonchar. That and the fact that the money he’s being offered by Metallurg is far more than anything he’s likely to be offered here in the National Hockey League.
Gonchar’s agent has stressed that nothing is signed at this point in time.
Sergei Gonchar is close to moving to Matallurg Magnitogorsk of the #KHL to join Mike Keenan. #Sens
