Senators Looking Up (SBP Being Renamed)

SensChirp June 17, 2013 0

(UPDATE 5:11 PM)- Thanks to some great work by a couple SensChirp readers it looks we may have our answer on the new name of the rink the Ottawa Senators call home.  Seems like the name will changed to The Canadian Tire Centre.  Have a look at the comment section below to see what led folks to that conclusion.  Official announcement coming tomorrow morning.

(UPDATE 2:55 PM)-  Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun is reporting that tomorrow's announcement has to do with a new partner and new name for Scotiabank Place.  A reminder that press conference is schedule for 10:00 AM tomorrow morning.

(UPDATE 2:05 PM)-  The Ottawa Senators have a press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning to announce "a significant business development".  No immediate word on what the press conference is about but we'll know tomorrow at 10:00 AM.  In the meantime, I'll do some digging to see if additional details are available.

A quick update with the NHL Draft less than two weeks away.

The Ottawa Senators still hold the 17th pick in the draft but speculation leading up to June 30th suggests the Sens are considering a few different scenarios with that selection.  With so much variance in the way scouts rank guys in the first round, we could see a lot of wheeling and dealing on the draft floor in New Jersey.

What I do know is this- the Sens are still considering all options with that pick.  I’ve heard rumours of trading the pick, I’ve heard suggestions they could trade down in the draft and most recently, a couple of contacts have suggested the Sens may even look to trade up in the selection order.

Apparently the Sens have looked as high as the top 5 but have been told that the price to move that high up will be significant.  The top five picks are currently held by Colorado, Florida, Tampa Bay, Nashville and Carolina.  I have a hard time believing any of the top 3 would be willing to move too far down.  With Jones, MacKinnon and Drouin the consensus top 3, you’d really have to make a significant offer to grab one of those picks.  That would leave Nashville and Carolina as potential trade partners.

You don’t want to put too much stock in this sort of draft rumour because it’s safe to say every GM has at least explored the idea of moving up in what is considered a deep first round.

With that said, it’s pretty clear Bryan Murray’s phone will get a workout between now and June 30th.
