As the May long weekend comes to a close, the Sens fans continue to count down the days until the NHL draft and a day that will be huge for the future of this franchise. Any of a number of scenarios will play out on draft day but either way the Sens will be coming away with a forward with tremendous upside.
There is one player in particular that has grabbed the attention of the Sens scouts the last little while.
That player’s name is Jonathan Huberdeau.
Huberdeau has been rising quickly on the lists of most scouts. Once thought to be a player on the Sens radar at the 6th pick, they would likely have to move up to grab him now. Huberdeau has had an outstanding playoff and has been a key piece in the Saint John Sea Dogs run to the Memorial Cup.
He has racked up 30 points in 19 playoff games and had two points in the Memorial Cup opener.
His play has not gone unnoticed by Sens scouts. The Ottawa Senators have had scouts watching Huberdeau more than any other team and apparently at least one guy high in the organization is said to be extremely high on Huberdeau. The latest ISS rankings had him ranked at #7 so there’s a chance he could be available when the Sens step up to the podium on June 24.
On the coaching front, I still believe the club would like to have someone in place before that day in June. A few names rumoured to be among the guys the Ottawa has an interest in; Kirk Muller and Marc Crawford. Dave Cameron and Kurt Kleinendorst will also be on the team’s radar.
I would love to see Muller here in Ottawa and think he is exactly the type of guy this young team needs. His name has already been associated with the job in Dallas as well.
On the Binghamton Senators front, the club is still waiting to find out who they will face in the Calder Cup Finals. The Hamilton Bulldogs have fought all the way back from a 3-0 deficit and will play the Aeros in Game 7 tomorrow night.
As soon as that game wraps up we should know the schedule for the Finals and we can begin to release details on the next road trip to Bingo (or Hamilton perhaps?).
