As first reported by Marc Brassard of Le Droit, Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will have surgery on his injured back at some point this week.
Initial recovery time was projected at 4-6 weeks.
At the end of the season there was some question about whether or not the surgery would be necessary but after a couple months trying to rehab the injury, Alfie has decided surgery is the best option. Alfredsson has always been a player that recovers quickly from injuries but it’s pretty clear that this was one that was lingering and has been for quite some time.
Seems to me like it’s in his best interest to have the surgery now and get it over with. Here’s hoping he can come back rested and ready to go next season. Hard to say what this means for Alfie’s career long term but it was pretty clear this was a surgery he was trying to avoid as long as possible.
Alfredsson continues to insist that retirement is not a consideration at this point in time.
- The Sens continue their draft day preparations today with visits from Gabriel Landeskog and Jonathan Huberdeau. It seems like these two guys are at the top of the Sens list heading into draft day but they will likely have to move up to snag either one. There is a chance Landeskog could fall but that almost seems like a dream scenario at this point.
- The Binghamton Senators have a chance to clinch the Calder Cup tonight with a win in Houston. More coming on this game later this afternoon.
(UPDATE1:20 PM) The Binghamton Senators have a chance to close out the Calder Cup Finals with a win tonight in Houston. According to Bingo beat writer Joy Lindsay, Jared Cowen was on the ice for the morning skate and is being labeled a game time decision. Obviously they don’t want to jeopardize his health long term so it sounds like they will be extremely careful.
The game can once again be seen on SportsnetSens or listened to live on the Team 1200.
Bryan Murray met with the media this afternoon and indicated that he hopes to have a coach in place within the next week. He also confirmed what was mentioned above- Daniel Alfredsson will have surgery on his injured back and the recovery will take 4-6 weeks.
