Stop me if any of this sounds familiar.
The Ottawa Senators found themselves in a hole on home ice. Down 2-0 to the Devils, the Senators rallied in the third period and then in overtime, Captain Daniel Alfredsson scored a power play goal to give the Sens another huge home ice victory.
After scoring his 400th against the Flames the other night, we all marveled at just how clutch the Sens captain really is. Well apparently for Daniel Alfredsson it's routine. Absolutely unbelievable to see Alfie net the winner on home ice for the second straight home game.
With the win, the Ottawa Senators vault the New Jersey Devils and the idle Winnipeg Jets and now sit 6th in the Eastern Conference.
As is so often the case, the Sens took the hard but incredibly exciting way to the two points.
Craig Anderson was forced to make several big stops after ugly turnovers but could only hold down the fort for so long. Konopka turned the puck over after a defensive zone faceoff and Danius Zubrus opened the scoring seconds later. Ottawa had chances to draw even but failed to capitalize. Moments after Spezza hit the post at one end, the Devils capitalized on a chance to grab a two goal lead. Things really weren't going the Sens way.
And then the third period started and the real Ottawa Senators came out to play.
Jason Spezza made no mistake on a breakaway chance early in the third period for his 14th of the season and gave the Sens hope. Erik Karlsson and Craig Anderson picked up the helpers. From that moment on you could feel the momentum swing in favour of the home side.
With the Senators killing off a penalty with less than seven minutes to play, a sneaky wrister by Erik Condra eluded Martin Brodeur and tied the game at 2-2. In the extra frame, a hooking penalty to David Clarkson gave the Sens the man advantage and they made the Devils pay.
It wasn't all good news for the Sens as Chris Phillips left the game in the third period. There was no update available on his status but we should know more tomorrow. Sergei Gonchar was expected to dress for this one and although he took the warm up, he did not play.
Ottawa is next in action on Thursday when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
