Remember those Edmonton debacles from earlier in the season?
They returned in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night. The Senators got down early and then, got further down. Much further down. By the time the final horn sounded after what felt like seven uninterrupted hours of embarrassment, the scoreboard read 7-1 Oilers.
In a season with plenty of candidates, this had to be Ottawa’s worst game of the season. Discouraging considering how well they played over the final twenty minutes the game before against this same Edmonton team.
Onward and upward, as the ol’ saying goes.
As if the result wasn’t bad enough, it seems like the Senators could be dealing with a couple serious injuries.
Colin White left the game in the second period after taking an ugly spill into the end boards. The team called it a lower-body injury at the time and DJ Smith didn’t really add much in the post-game, only saying that they would know more tomorrow.
Considering how it looked on impact and the fact that he could put zero weight on his leg while skating off, it certainly doesn’t look good.
It’s a damn shame too because White had really turned the corner recently and had become one of Ottawa’s most consistent forwards. And considering the lack of depth at centre, it’s going to be tough to fill that void.
Interestingly enough, it did lead to Tim Stützle getting some reps in at centre in the third period on a line with Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson. It was mostly garbage time minutes but Stützle certainly didn’t look out of place there.
White wasn’t the only ugly looking injury on the night as Ryan Dzingel also left the game with an injury to his right knee. Again, it didn’t look good at all.
There’s a lot of people clamouring for a Logan Brown call-up after last night’s injuries but unfortunately, he too is injured. Shocking, I know.
Seems as though any AHL recalls will have to wait until they return home from the road trip anyway.
The Senators are back on the ice at 1:30 PM today so we’ll see what they have in mind.
