Ullmark, Cozens Lead Senators Over Red Wings

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-Linus Ullmark.

-Okay, let me explain. Linus Ullmark has had some brilliant moments in his first season as an Ottawa Senator but last night sits comfortably at the top of the list. And really, no other game comes close. With the team in front of him looking uncharacteristically frantic, Ullmark was at his best in what was honestly one of the best goaltending performances in franchise history. Ullmark was brilliant for 60 minutes last night and I mean that quite literally. 60 minutes and not a second more. When the Senators traded for Ullmark this past summer, it was with the belief that he could help get this team back to the post-season. Last night it looked like he was ready to do it on his own.

-Seems like Dylan Cozens is gonna fit in just fine, by the way. If you listened to some of the most disgruntled Sabres fans in the immediate aftermath of the trade, you would think that Cozens was just gonna role into town and go through the motions. Uh guess again. Cozens has racked up a ridiculous 17 hits through two games in a Sens jersey and honestly, has been noticeable every time he’s touched the ice. You could tell that late goal meant a lot to Cozens but also to his new teammates, who have gone out of their way to welcome Cozens to Ottawa. Fans have too and it’s clear that Cozens has appreciated the warm-welcome.

-Sorry, just to circle back to a point I made earlier…LINUS ULLMARK.

-The boxscore doesn’t tell the whole story but that was a damn fine debut from Fabian Zetterlund last night. He finished with just 10:12 of ice time but he made the most of his opportunities registering two shots on goal (both great scoring chances) and six hits. It was pretty easy to see what Staios and company liked about Zetterlund. Great skater and a willingness to get to the front of the net to create chances. Travis Green mentioned that Zetterlund was still sort of adjusting to the team’s system but it’s safe to say he won’t spend much more time on that fourth line.
