FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS
-On Friday night, the Senators were able to take advantage of a tired team. On Saturday, they were that tired team. Things started well for the Senators but they didn’t have much in the tank through three periods. Structurally, they were solid and able to keep this game close until the five minutes but they just didn’t seem to have the same jump they did on Friday against Anaheim. Over a long season, that will happen. They need to bounce back against Washington.
-And even though they didn’t have a whole lot of energy, the Senators still had chances to draw even. Alex Chiasson had a wide open net in the third period and just couldn’t cash. You never want to be satisfied with a loss, especially against the damn Montreal Canadiens but this was overall, a pretty good effort from the Senators.
-Dave Cameron has shown early on in his tenure that he’s not afraid to sit a veteran. Either in the form of a healthy scratch or by severely limiting ice time in game. Colin Greening was struggling last night and as a result, finished the night with less than six minutes of ice time. Meanwhile David Legwand finished below 10 minutes. Pretty strong message sent to those two in-game.
-Lots of talk about the Senators shopping for a partner to play alongside Erik Karlsson. Thanks to the entirely ridiculous injury to Marc Methot, the Senators are now desperately looking for someone that can eat up those big minutes beside Karlsson. Good luck. Defence in any form are pretty are to come by right now and top pairing guys will cost a fortune. The Senators are not in a position where they should be giving up high picks or prospects for temporary solutions. This is a problem the Senators will likely have to solve from within. I might try Jared Cowen there again for a little bit.
-Just one game left before the Senators break for the Holidays. They are in Washington tomorrow night to take on the Capitals and then have four days off before returning to the ice next Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings. Things will be pretty quiet around the Senators but we’ll try to keep things going around here with a couple guest posts.
