FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS
-To listen to Guy Boucher talk about it, this was probably one of Ottawa’s best performances of the season. He mentioned it a couple times in post-game press conference but the “buy in” from the team was everything you could expect from start to finish. Sharp defensively, scoring from top players and solid performances up and down the line up. Play like that on a regular basis and you’ll rack up plenty of points.
-Against Montreal on Tuesday, the Senators gave up way too many shots but they made life pretty easy for Craig Anderson against the Bruins. Boston finished the game with just 20 shot on goal, the lowest total given up by the Senators so far this season. Obviously Ottawa didn’t generate many chances of their own (just 26 shots including 4 in the second period) but this was a real solid defensive effort from start to finish.
-That Kyle Turris/Bobby Ryan give and go in the third period really was a thing of beauty. And you could tell by the reaction on the face of Turris immediately after the goal. Those two have always had pretty good chemistry together so here’s hoping they can stick together for a stretch of games. For the first time all season it’s starting to feel like the Senators could have two legitimate scoring lines.
-The expressions “ear reconstruction” and “return to the game” really aren’t two things you would expect to hear in the same sentence but it happened last night. Dzingel took an Erik Karlsson slap shot directly in the ear last night and according to Guy Boucher, the ear had to be “reconstructured”. There were multiple lacerations on his ear and it seemed like a serious injury. Incredibly, Dzingel was actually able to return to the game.
-Off ice, yesterday was a big day for the Ottawa Senators and the RendezVous LeBreton Group as they were officially named as the preferred proponent to develop at LeBreton Flats. It was a significant milestone that has been almost six months in the making as the RendezVous bid worked hard to address some of the concerns of the National Capital Commission. Listening to the questions of the Board Members afterwards, it’s clear that this was anything but a slam dunk and that there are some very real concerns still in play. While none of the Board Members could say it outright, a couple of them seemed to be hinting at some concerns about financing related to the project. Another hurdle cleared yesterday but still a long way to go.
