Staios, Green Speak on Day One of Camp

Day One of Training Camp is in the books and as you hope for this time of year, it was entirely uneventful.

Aside from an adorable picture of Claude Giroux and his kids and an equally adorable picture of Linus Ullmark in Sens colours for the first time, there wasn’t a lot to talk about as Camp opened in Ottawa.

No drama. No misquotes. Sure the team’s Captain was a no show but it’s because his Wife just gave birth to future Senator, Ryder Tkachuk.

Even the season opening press conference with General Manager Steve Staios and Head Coach Travis Green was weirdly boring.

It’s still sort of early in his tenure but Staios is proving to be best in class at saying nothing. And I mean in the best way possible. He has his talking points and he sticks to ’em. There was a point in this morning’s remarks where he kinda sorta suggested they want to compete for a playoff spot this year but it was a careful declaration.

Meanwhile it seems like we’ll get something similar from Travis Green. Since he stepped into the role back in May, Green has been remarkably consistent in his comments to the media. He’ll talk about the importance of hard work, he’ll talk about being tough but fair, he’ll talk about accountability and he’ll talk about being prepared. What he won’t do is talk about his players in any great detail and or draw much of a reaction at all with his comments in the media.

So as things kick into high gear tomorrow, with the first on-ice session set for 10:00 AM, all is calm at Sens Camp.

And that’s a good thing this time of year.

-It’s dangerous to read into Training Camp groupings this time of the year but what the hell else are we supposed to do? If you’re looking for clues on the blueline, it seems like Thomas Chabot and Artem Zub might start together while Jake Sanderson is likely to be paired with Nick Jensen. Up front, Tkachuk-Stützle-Giroux might be a thing and the rest is mostly a guessing game.
