(UPDATE 3:42 PM)- Pierre snuck in one more deal at the buzzer. Pending UFA defenceman Erik Gudbranson is off to the Nashville Predators with a 2023 7th round pick coming Ottawa’s way. While it sounds like the Senators had a couple teams with interest in Gudbranson, obviously it wasn’t what you would call a “bidding war”. Gudbranson filled his role admirably here in Ottawa and he should be a good fit on a Nashville team fighting to hold on to the final playoff spot in their division.
(UPDATE 1:45 PM)- With a couple spots suddenly open on their blueline, the Ottawa Senators made a move on the NHL’s waiver wire, snagging 22-year old defenceman Victor Mete from the Montreal Canadiens. Mete is on his way to Ottawa and expected to play for the Senators tonight vs. the Jets. He’ll do it wearing number 98. Mete is the first player to wear that number in team history.
(UPDATE 10:51 AM)- By the way, there’s also a hockey game tonight. The Winnipeg Jets are in town and the Senators are on the ice for the Game Day skate. While Shane Pinto and Jacob Bernard-Docker have joined the group, they are not expected to play. Here’s how DJ had ’em lined up.

(UPDATE 10:17 AM)- Pierre Dorion made a couple minor moves last night and it sounds like if he does make additional trades today, they’re going to look a lot like the ones he pulled off on Sunday night. The Senators have a couple UFAs that are drawing some interest, including Erik Gudbranson and Artem Anisimov. Bruce Garrioch was on TSN earlier this morning and suggested that Anton Forsberg, Ryan Dzingel and Chris Tierney are all longshots to move.
On the eve of the NHL Trade Deadline Day, Pierre Dorion has moved a couple of his pending UFAs.
Mike Reilly is off to Boston. Braydon Coburn is a New York Islander.
Late Sunday night, the Ottawa Senators got the ball rolling when they announced that they have traded pending UFA defenceman Mike Reilly to the Boston Bruins. Ottawa gets a 3rd round pick in the 2022 Entry Draft in return.
In the last few days there had been talk of a potential extension for Reilly but obviously the two sides were unable to find common ground. The Senators wanted to keep it short-term but this close to free agency, it’s understandable that Reilly would want to see what else is out there on the open market.
Not a huge return for Dorion but a slight upgrade on what they paid for Reilly originally so they have to be satisfied with the return.
Reilly was a polarizing player this season. When he was at his best, he was an effective puck moving defenceman that seemed like a perfect fit alongside Artem Zub. And his underlying numbers confirm as much. But there were also nights where like many of Ottawa’s D core, he struggled in his own end of the rink.
Will be interesting to see how he fits in with a Bruins team that has had a ton of injuries in the back end.
That wasn’t the only deal of the night though as Dorion sent another pending UFA packing.
Braydon Coburn has recent Stanley Cup Finals experience and the New York Islanders fancy themselves a contender. Seems like a good fit.
Coburn has been in and out of the Ottawa lineup this season, appearing in just 16 games and putting up a couple assists along the way.
