Senators Trade Dzingel to Columbus

The Great Ottawa Fire Sale continues and this time it’s Ryan Dzingel on his way out the door.

Dzingel has been traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for two 2nd round picks (2020 and 2021) and forward Anthony Duclair. The Senators also send a 7th round pick to the Jackets in the deal.

Quite a haul for Dzingel who appears to be a straight rental in Columbus.

Unlike Matt Duchene, who only arrived in the organization a matter of months ago, Dzingel is a homegrown talent.

The Senators drafted Dzingel in the 7th round back in 2011 and have watched him develop from a completely unknown forward out of Ohio State into a reliable goal scorer at the NHL level.

The Senators have been so fortunate to hit on some of these late round picks in recent years and Dzingel is a fine example. And that’s why it’s such a shame to watch him traded away just as he’s hitting the prime of his career.

More than just his impact on the ice, Dzingel just seemed like a really good person away from the rink.

According to multiple reports, the Senators offered Dzingel an extension but it really didn’t sound like those talks went anywhere.

A player with Dzingel’s offensive  could certainly get something north of $5 million on the open market.

Dzingel led the team in goal scoring last year and has followed that up what is likely to be a career year. Through 57 games, he’s already surpassed his career in points and is within a goal of his career-high.

Anthony Duclair has bounced around a little bit the last few years after a 20 goal season with Arizona a few years back. He has 11 goals and 19 points in 53 games this season. He is an RFA this summer.

-The Senators made another roster move earlier in the day, sending defenceman Max Lajoie to Belleville of the American Hockey League.  A move that was a long time coming. After a strong start, Lajoie has struggled lately, at times looking a little bit overwhelmed by the NHL grind.  He’s certainly not the only one that has struggled on that blueline but he’s one that still has a bright future in the NHL. Hopefully he can go down to Belleville and be an important part of a playoff run.

While all the attention continues to be on Pierre Dorion, the Ottawa Senators are still playing hockey games.  Just barely though.

Tonight, we got ourselves a good ol’ fashion Tkachukoff at the CTC.

Matthew v. Brady. Round 1. Fight.

Seriously though, they are probably going to fight.

Guy Boucher met with the media this morning and wasn’t sure about Anthony Duclair’s status. although in Guy’s defence, he doesn’t seem sure about much the last couple weeks.

Duclair played games on Friday and Saturday night already so they may give him a day off to get settled.

When he does suit up for his first game in an Ottawa uniform, it will be with #10 on his back.  He wore #91 in Columbus but in Ottawa, that number will forever belong to Alexandre Daigle.

Christian Wolanin is up from Belleville to take the spot of Max Lajoie.

Here’s how Boucher lined ’em up at the morning skate.

Craig Anderson gets the start in goal. Puck drop is schedule for just after 7:00 PM.

The game is available on Sportsnet, TVA and there should be a stream available, unless of course Pierre Dorion trades that away too.

Here is a BEAUTIFUL table that will provide a temporary distraction from the dismantling of the Ottawa Senators.
