Certainly didn’t see this one coming.
This morning, the Ottawa Senators informed Bobby Ryan that they intend to buy out the final two years of his contract. Ryan will be placed on waivers later today.
Would be interested to know what the thinking is behind this move. Saving money seems like the easy answer though although not in the way the Senators usually go about it.
The Senators are already in a situation where they’ll need to make a few moves just to get to the cap floor and this will complicate that process a little bit.
It’s possible this is something that both player and team agreed was for the best but again, we’ll need to get a little more context to know exactly why the Senators are making this move right now.
Ryan has two years left on his deal worth $7.5 mil a season including $2 million in signing bonus. His cap hit came in at $7.25 mil.
