Maybe not the signing fans have been waiting for but in a seemingly endless stretch of no news at all, it will have to do.
This morning, the Ottawa Senators announced that they have signed forward Scott Sabourin to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal is worth $750,000 at the NHL level and $200,000 in the AHL.
Sabourin previously spent time with the Senators before making the regrettable choice to join the Leafs organization for a year. He appeared in just six games with the Marlies and one with the Leafs. Then, he came to his senses and returned to his hometown team.
Here’s Pierre Dorion on the signing…
“Scott is a player and person with whom the organization has familiarity. He plays hard, has a physical presence, is respected on the ice and maintains strong leadership qualities. We’ll look to him to help guide our younger players and prospects.”
We know DJ Smith is a fan of the player but I think it’s safe to assume that this is a little extra toughness for the team down in Belleville.
Sabourin’s story and his long journey to the NHL has been well-documented over the last two years. After spending seven seasons in the American Hockey League, the then 27-year old Sabourin finally landed a spot on an NHL roster when he appeared in 35 games with the Senators in the 2019-2020 season.
He scored in his first game.
