Every year in Training Camp, we hear about the possibility of “earning” a spot.
It’s one of those things you say but rarely does it play out that way. Contract status and depth charts usually dictate who is around when the dust settles at the end of Camp.
Enter Scott Sabourin.
He came to Ottawa on a tryout essentially. And on a team with so many young players pushing for spots, he had to know it was going to be tough to force his way into the organization.
But with just one preseason game to go, Scott Sabourin is still hanging around.
His high-intensity, physical style has been noticeable in every game he’s played this preseason. He fought Ben Harpur. He took all of one game to get under the skin of most of the Toronto Maple Leafs roster. He understands his role and he’s still here against all odds.
Today, he was rewarded for his efforts.
This doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll still be here on opening night but it does guarantee a spot in Belleville this year.
Sabourin is an Ottawa-native and at 27 years of age (and undrafted), has yet to play a game in the National Hockey League. He took one more step towards that dream today.
He’ll likely be in the line up in the final preseason game tomorrow night.
