This afternoon, the Ottawa Senators signed RFA defenceman Victor Mete to a one-year deal worth $1.2M.
It’s a pretty significant raise over the $735,000 he made last season and helps the two sides avoid salary arbitration later this month.
The 23-year old Mete, who was claimed off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens, appeared in 14 games with the Senators down the stretch and quickly carved out a role for himself on the Ottawa blueline.
While things look a bit crowded back there heading into a new season, both Pierre Dorion and DJ Smith have made it clear they are more than comfortable coming into the season with eight defenceman battling it out for ice time.
Here’s Pierre Dorion on the signing.
“Victor was a really solid addition to our defence corps over the last month of the season last year. He’s mobile, poised and defensively aware. We’re looking forward to seeing his progression in our lineup in 2021-22.”
Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, Logan Brown and Filip Gustavsson are the remaining restricted free agents.
