The Ottawa Senators have been quiet on the open market today but they still found a way to make a splash.
This afternoon, the Senators announced they have signed RFA goaltender Matt Murray to a four-year contract extension worth a total of $25 million. That’s a cap hit of $6.25 mil a season.
Here’s how the deal breaks down.
The deal also comes with a 10-team NTC, according to Bob McKenzie.
From Ottawa’s perspective, they’ll be happy that they were able to backload the contract a little bit and in turn, spend a little less in the short-term. Meanwhile Murray gets the long-term security he was looking for on this contract.
Safe to say that’s a little more than anybody was expecting (a year longer than but the Senators obviously feel pretty confident that Murray is going to bounce back from what has been a bit of a down year.
With this big money/multi-year deal, the Senators are hoping he can regain the form he showed during two Stanley Cup runs with the Pittsburgh Penguins
