One big RFA down, one to go!
Goes without saying but this certainly, on paper, looks like a perfect deal for both sides. The Senators lock up a key piece of their young core to a reasonable contract and Batherson gets a long-term deal at a good number.
Here’s the breakdown of the deal- $2.5M in 2021-22, $3.5M in 2022-23, $5.4M in 2023-24, $5.4M in 2024-25, $6.5M in 2025-26 and $6.55M in 2026-27.
As is the case with many of these RFA contracts, there is a bit of risk here. The organization is betting on Drake Batherson to continue his progression as a player and based on what we saw from The Drake last year, that’s a pretty good bet to make.
Here’s Pierre Dorion on the deal…
“Drake represents an integral component of our future at forward. Dating to his first pro season, he has steadily progressed to the point where he is now widely recognized as a bonafide top line NHL winger. He possesses a strong ability to play at both ends of the ice, is a key powerplay contributor and someone we expect to be a prominent player for us for several years to come.”
A long-term financial commitment to key piece of the core. You’re next, Brady.
