There are times in professional sports when something so shocking happens, that it literally takes your breath away. Those moments when you know years later, people will ask you where you were when it happened.
This is not one of those moments.
Today, the Senators finally made it official. KHL defenceman Artem Zub has signed a one-year contract with the organization.
The Zub signing has been rumoured for what feels like an eternity but because the Senators had to wait for his KHL contract to expire, they could not make it official until today.
It’s a one-year, entry-level contract.
Here’s the General Manager Pierre Dorion on the worst kept secret in hockey.
“We’re pleased that Artem has elected to pursue an NHL career here in Ottawa. Artem is a smart defensive defenceman who moves the puck well and who utilizes his strength and mobility to make plays. His extensive international resume will help him transition to a North American style of play but his key attribute is his sound ability to defend.”
In the discussions with Ottawa, Zub obviously liked his chances at landing an NHL gig on a permanent basis. In previous comments, the Senators have made it clear that they see him as a player that can play in the NHL next season.
The 24-year old Zub scored 13 goals and added nine assists in 57 KHL games last season.
In an era with almost zero hockey news, I am extremely grateful for the fact that I have been able to announce this signing on 15 different occassions. Stay tuned for more on this development including articles on where he fits into the line up and predictions for his rookie season.
Welcome aboard, Arty. For real this time.
