Okay, Pierre. Now you’re just showing off.
In what was supposed to be a quiet lead up to the start of training camp, the Ottawa Senators have been surprisingly busy. The Derek Stepan trade, the Tim Stuetzle ELC and now…this.
Tonight, the Senators put their cap space to good use pulling off a trade with the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
Certainly didn’t take Pierre long to recoup the 2nd round pick lost in last night’s Derek Stepan trade.
Goes without saying but there are clearly salary cap implications here for both teams, as the Senators give the Lightning some much needed cap relief and get a 2nd round pick for their troubles.
In Coburn and Paquette, the Senators are getting a couple serviceable players although it’s not immediately clear where they fit in the line up or if they are more likely to start the season on the taxi squad. Both players are UFAs at the end of the upcoming season though. Meanwhile, both Anders Nilsson and Marian Gaborik are likely to start the season on LTIR in Tampa Bay.
Certainly an interesting 24 hours for the Senators.
