We have officially entered the point of the off season where any news, even the slightest most obvious piece of information that you thought was official long ago, warrants a new post.
These two updates would certainly qualify.
This morning, the Ottawa Senators made a couple long-rumoured Coaching hires official. Former Colorado Avalanche Assistant Coach André Tourigny has joined Dave Cameron’s staff as an Assistant. This move has been talked about for a couple months now but obviously it took a little bit of time to make things official. Tourigny spent the last two seasons with the Avalanche and before that was the Head Coach and General Manager of the QMJHL’s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
As The6thSens pointed out back in May, Tourigny would have been one of Dave Cameron’s Assistant had he originally landed the job back in 2011. The two worked together at the World Juniors in 2011. Clearly this move has been a long time coming.
No immediate word on what role Tourigny would take on with the Senators although in Colorado, he primarily worked with the team’s defenceman. He’s expected to address the media in Ottawa at 11:15 AM this morning.
At the same time, the Senators made another important signing official as according to Don Brennan of the Ottawa, they inked Binghamton Senators Head Coach Luke Richardson to a one year extension. It’s obviously great news for the team in Binghamton and especially for the team’s younger players making the jump to the American Hockey League this season.
There were some concerns the Sens might lose Richardson to an NHL Head Coaching job this summer so they’ll certainly be happy to keep him in the organization for at least one more season.
