It has been rumoured for months and today the Ottawa Senators made it official.
Staios will report directly to new Owner Michael Andlauer. Here’s Andlauer on the move…
“I am so excited that Steve is joining me in Ottawa to lead our hockey operations. I have worked with Steve for many years and know first-hand that he will strengthen our team with his hockey acumen, attention to detail, commitment to excellence and enthusiasm for the game and its players. In hockey you can never accumulate too much talent. Having Steve and Pierre leading our hockey department gives us a formidable team.”
It’s that last line that will be talked about a lot in the coming days, particularly in terms of how Dorion and Staios work together on those important hockey operations decisions and ultimately, what the chain of command looks like up to the Owner’s office.
Before landing in Ottawa, Staios spent time with the Edmonton Oilers as a special advisor to the team’s hockey operations staff. He was well-regarded in his time with the Oilers and at one point, seemed to be in line for a GM position with the club. Before that, Staios was President and GM with the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs
The 16-year NHL veteran played in 1001 games over the course of his career.
