Update – Senators to Forfeit First Round Pick

Sigh

Also of note, the Ottawa Senators have scheduled a 3:15 PM news conference.

Sadly, there’s no Sens game today either. This leaves me no choice but to acknowledge the Evgeni Dadonov story.

No, a DIFFERENT Evgeni Dadonov story.

If you’ve spent an time on the streets over the last couple weeks, you’ll know that there is trouble brewing for the Ottawa Senators. Lalime’s Martian, a Molson-loving Twitter personality, was the first to report that there may be some news coming related to the Evgeni Dadonov trade saga from a couple seasons ago.

Elliott Friedman picked up the thread on Saturday and now Sens fans are nervously awaiting some sort of announcement related to a punishment from the league.

Here’s what Elliotte offered on the situation…

“Sometime, I think, in the next few days, the NHL is going to announce some sort of punishment to the Senators for that situation. I think we’re going to get a clear explanation of what occurred and why Vegas wasn’t at fault.”

For those of you that are too busy to care, here’s the broad strokes. The self-entitled, league-darling Vegas Golden Knights, acquired Evgeni Dadonov from the Senators with the sole intent of flipping him to another team. They claim that they were under the impression the forward had not submitted his list in time to Ottawa of teams he did not want to be traded to during the 2021-22 season. This is of course everyone’s fault but their own.

As it turned out, that wasn’t true, and Anaheim was among the teams on Dadonov’s list. The deal was subsequently voided by the NHL. This was the first bad thing to ever happen to the Vegas Golden Knights and they are out for blood as a result. They are clearly worried about their image around the league which is rich coming from a team with those cringe-worth pregame ceremonies.

Chris Johnston elaborated on the situation during a recent episode of his podcast (look at this guy, recording new podcast episodes like it’s nothing, by the way) and provided some additional details. A lot of it stems back to a chaotic and confusing system as it relates to player no-trade clauses, which sounds like a league issue more than a Sens issue, but Vegas is still cranky and wants someone to pay.

The punishment is expected to range from forfeiting a draft pick (unlikely to be a first though) to BANISHMENT from the league.

Suspect we’ll hear more on this story in the next 24-48 hours.

Remain buckled.
