And you thought the Ottawa Senators would be sellers at this year’s trade deadline.
With the clock ticking towards Monday’s 3:00 PM trade freeze, Pierre Dorion has added a player to the roster. This afternoon, the Senators acquired Travis Hamonic from the Vancouver Canucks. The Senators are sending a 3rd round pick to the Canucks to make it happen.
Hamonic hasn’t been a great fit in Vancouver which is why he was available in the lead up to the deadline. He has another year on his deal, which is why the Senators had interest. Giving up a 3rd round pick for a player largely viewed as a salary dump is a bit of a head-scratcher but we’ll see what Dorion has to say about the move in the coming days.
Twitter is predictably angry over the move but with Josh Brown likely on the way out in the next day or so, the Senators wanted to fill a spot on the backend. Hamonic has some history with Jack Capuano, which was apparently a factor in the move. On the surface, he seems like he could be a fit with Thomas Chabot. Or maybe Jake Sanderson? We’ll see how that plays out heading into next season.
Hamonic has appeared in 24 games with the Canucks this season, putting up seven points along the way. The right-shot defenceman has 699 games of NHL experience under his belt, including stops in Long Island, Calgary and Vancouver.
What’s next, Pierres?
