It was a trade I accidentally predicted months ago.
This afternoon, the Ottawa Senators announced that they have acquired defenceman and hometown boy Erik Gudbranson from the Anaheim Ducks. They send a 5th round pick in 2021 the other way.
Gudbranson is a right-shot defenceman that has bounced around a little bit lately including stops in Florida, Vancouver, Pittsburgh and Anaheim.
His game has bounced around a little bit too but when he’s at his best, he’s just a mean dude that brings an edge to the blueline. Certainly replaces a bit of the physicality lost in Mark Borowiecki.
Also noteworthy is the fact that he has a cap hit of $4 million with an actual salary of just $3 million.
Entering a contract year, you know Gudbranson will want to have a strong season and prove he still has some game. Not a lot unlike Mark Borowiecki last year actually. And while they won’t say it directly, you would think the Senators think there’s a chance they can get an equal return or better at next year’s deadline if Gudbranson plays well. Or he fits in perfectly and they decide to keep him around.
Pretty harmless deal, either way.
Here’s Pierre Dorion on what Gudbranson brings to the team…
“Erik Gudbranson provides another sizable presence to our defence corps. He’s a reliable veteran who plays an intimidating style of game and someone who will add a combination of grit, energy and, most importantly, leadership to our lineup.”
