And just like that, another key piece of this team’s present and future has been locked in to a big ol’ contract extension.
Jake Sanderson is stickin’ around for a long, LONG time.
It’s an eight year deal that will see Sanderson earn just a shade over $8 mil a season. Here’s how it breaks down…
Sanderson will earn exactly $8.050M in each of the eight seasons of the deal. The contract also includes a 10-team no-trade clause in the final three years.
It’s the kind of contract that jumps off the page for a player heading into just his second season in the National Hockey League but one that will look like a steal in the very near future.
Here’s GM Pierre Dorion on the signing…
‘Jake’s transition to the pro game has been flawless. He’s a very mature young man who demonstrates a routine and skillful ability to play important minutes with poise. An effortless skater who holds himself to a high standard, he has the talent to be one of the best all-around defencemen in the NHL for years to come. We’re very pleased to have another significant member of our core group of players under long-term contract.‘
Sanderson is just the latest young star to look at what the Ottawa Senators are building here and say, “Yea, I want in”.
It’s not only a testament to the impressive work Pierre Dorion has done getting out in front of these contracts and selling these young players on the vision here in Ottawa but it also shows just how far this team has come in terms of resetting the vibe around the franchise and the culture in that locker room.
It’s a good time to be a fan of the Ottawa Senators.
