(UPDATE 12:17 PM)- Well that was unexpected. The Detroit Red Wings have claimed Cody Goloubef off waivers today. The Senators will now need to recall another defenceman, with only five on the roster.
(UPDATE 10:30 AM)- Welcome to your Josh Norris years. The Ottawa Senators announced this morning that they have recalled the red-hot Josh Norris from Belleville of the American Hockey League. A well-deserved call-up for a player that has dominated at the AHL level this year. 58 points in 51 games. Interesting to note that this move puts the Senators at 24 players on the roster. More to come? You bet.
Just four days to go. On Monday at 3:00 PM, the madness stops.
The NHL Trade Deadline is closing in rapidly and once again, the Ottawa Senators find themselves at the centre of the action.
Up front, they have five forwards approaching unrestricted free agency. That list includes Jean Gabriel Pageau, Vladislav Namestnikov, Tyler Ennis, Mikkel Boedker and Scott Sabourin.
Nobody is touching the last two but the other three are very much in play.
On the blueline, the biggest trade chip has already moved. Dylan DeMelo is a Winnipeg Jet now and the Senators have added a 3rd round pick to an already ridiculous number of draft picks.
Ron Hainsey and Cody Goloubef are both free agents this summer but it’s unlikely either guy moves.
In the case of Hainsey, the Senators would love to move him, but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of interest at this point. Cody Goloubef was put on waivers yesterday with the hope that they can add him to the roster in Belleville at some point down the stretch.
Craig Anderson is also a UFA this summer but again, it doesn’t sound like there are many (any?) teams calling.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the next few days play out.
Last night, the Senators made a last-minute decision to scratch Vladislav Namestnikov. Protecting an asset, in this instance. There are a handful of teams with interest in Namestnikov. According to Darren Dreger, that list includes the likes of the Jets, the Avalanche, the Blue Jackets and the Leafs. Dorion will be looking for at least a 3rd round pick in return.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we heard something on this front today.
Tyler Ennis is also drawing some interest. On Insider Trading, Pierre LeBrun mentioned that the Edmonton Oilers may have interest. A mid to late round pick is likely all the Senators would be looking for in return.
The situation with Pageau is a little more fluid.
The Senators have done their best to keep contract talks with Pageau under wraps but last night, it became public knowledge that they are trying to get something done. What’s interesting, is a couple days ago I heard something was close with Pageau.
This tells me that the organization legitimately feels like they’ll find a way to get him signed. Although it’s worth pointing out, things felt the same way with Mark Stone leading up to last year’s deadline.
The nice thing about this Pageau situation is it almost feels like the organization is in a spot where they can do no wrong. If they sign him, it’s nice to see a guy like that stick around. He’s exactly the type of player you want your young players learning from.
And if they can’t get it done, well then it’s the final band-aid pull in a tear down for the ages. Edmonton and Philadelphia are among the teams with interest in Pageau. Maybe Boston, Carolina and the New York Islanders too.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend fastening your seatbelts.
