Rookie Tournament Begins in London

It may only be the Rookie Tournament but it still feels good to say it…

The Sens play tonight.

The Ottawa Senators will play the first of three weekend games tonight against the rookies from the Toronto Maple Leafs. They’ll take on the Penguins tomorrow afternoon before wrapping up the tournament against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Annual Rookie Tournament is always the first real sign that a new season is almost upon us.

This whirlwind three game round robin is always fun to follow as a fan.  There’s a unique mix of brand new prospects playing alongside more established “veterans” with everyone trying to make a good impression on the organization heading into training camp next week.

On one end of the spectrum, you have guys like Matt Puempel and Mikael Wikstrand who will be expected to dominate in a tournament like this.  And on the other hand, there will be younger prospects like Thomas Chabot and Filip Chlapik keen to show the organization made a good decision drafting them just a few months ago

No line up notes out there yet for this one but you can see the full 24 man roster here.

And remember yesterday we learned that Nick Paul will sit out this year’s tournament with a hamstring issue.  Matt Puempel will wear the C for tonight’s game while Max McCormick and Buddy Robinson get the A’s.

Chris Driedger is expected to get the start in the Ottawa goal.  Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:30 PM with the game available on Rogers TV and on the radio at TSN 1200.
