Maybe you can go home again?
According to an article by Pierre LeBrun over on The Athletic, long-time Senator and UFA-to-be Jason Spezza is at least open to the idea of a return to Ottawa this summer.
Spezza, now 35 years old, is coming off an up and down season with the Dallas Stars. He spent the majority of the year in a bottom six role, putting up just 27 points in 76 games. He followed that up with a decent playoff run, notching 5 points in 11 post-season games.
And now, as he approaches a summer of unknown and a shot at testing the open market, Spezza is making it clear that he still wants to play. And interestingly enough, that he’s willing to consider a return to the city where he played the first 686 games of his career.
Here’s how Spezza answered when asked about the possibility of a reunion with the Sens this off-season.
“It’s still early in this process but I have a good relationship with the people in Ottawa that are still there. It would be high on my list of considerations that’s for sure. I left there on good terms. It definitely keeps the door open. It’s food for thought, for sure. But it’s so early in the process, we’ll see.’’
So you’re telling me there’s a chance.
It’s no secret that the Senators are going to be a young team next year and in theory, a veteran with the smarts and skill that Spezza has seems like a perfect fit.
Plus, the possibility of Jason Spezza returning to Ottawa in the same summer they bring back Jacques Martin is just too perfect to pass up.
It’s worth pointing out that to date, the Sens have given no indication they’ll be looking to add in free agency this summer and it’s entirely possible Spezza finds a better fit on the open market.
Something to keep an eye on heading into free agency this summer.
