Pierre Dorion is really taking some of the fun out of Trade Deadline Day.
This evening, the Senators have traded UFA-to-be Nick Paul to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ottawa is getting Mathieu Joseph and a 4th round pick in return.
In Joseph, the Senators are getting a 25-year old forward that has 18 points in 58 games this season. Joseph was a 4th round pick in the 2015 draft and has gradually worked his way into the Tampa Bay lineup and carved out a role for himself in the team’s bottom six.
Joseph is a restricted free agent this summer.
It goes without saying but the Senators are losing a good one in Nick Paul.
Both sides seemed to be working hard at a contract extension in the last week or so but obviously couldn’t land on a number that worked for both sides. As effective as Paul has been for the Senators in a bottom six role, he came across as an even better teammate and person.
Damn shame they couldn’t make it work here in Ottawa.
