After letting Sens fans stew on the rumour for a couple days, Sens Owner Eugene Melnyk stepped in on Monday.
“The idea of trading our third and fifth picks for the No. 1 pick is nonsensical.”
Well that’s that.
And while it is a little strange that this message comes from the Owner- ya know the Owner that insists he prefers to leave the hockey decisions to Pierre Dorion (lol)- it was a timely intervention. That wacky rumour seemed to be taking on a life of its own.
With more than two months till the Draft, the scenarios both Sens and Ranger fans were dreaming up and/or fretting about were becoming a bit ridiculous.
Although looking at the message from Melnyk, he seems to be saying they won’t move 3rd AND 5th for 1st overall. He didn’t technically dismiss the idea of moving one of those picks plus additional assets for the number one selection in the Draft.
So, dream on everyone.
We talked about it earlier this week but considering the draft capital the Senators have accumulated over the last couple years, making some sort of play for first overall just makes sense. The original rumour was pretty out there and clearly pulled out of a thin air but it is safe to assume that Dorion will make a call to Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton, if he hasn’t already.
Third and fifth seems like way too much to give up but this article on Silver Seven shows that based on previous years, there are many instances where it would make a lot of sense.
For now though, we’ll return to our regularly scheduled programming of agonizing over who the Senators may land at 3rd and 5th overall.
And on that front, Bruce Garrioch dropped an interesting note in his latest piece suggesting that the Sens scouts are particularly fond of Swedish forward Lucas Raymond.
Easy to see why. He would certainly make sense at 5th overall.
