It’s a tradition unlike any other.
Eugene Melnyk speaks. And we all freak out.
It’s a strange tradition but one that has become almost automatic since Melnyk’s legendary rant on Parliament Hill. The thing is, a lot of the time, we are looking for things to be mad about in his remarks. He just has that affect on us.
So last night, when we learned that Eugene Melnyk would be making an appearance on Bob McCown’s podcast today, we were all ready. Ready to let our dear owner ruin our day.
Yet this time, I’m not sure there was anything wrong with it.
Sure he says some weird stuff during the almost 39-minute interview but it was mostly harmless. Melnyk talks about COVID-19 vaccines, the NHL’s plans to return to play and about the idea of an all-Canadian division.
Perhaps the most interesting thing to come out of this interview is the fact that Melnyk himself is close to acquiring the rights to a “rapid testing” option which would be particularly helpful for pro sports teams looking to get fans back in the building.
While the format for a new season is still TBD, it’s clear that the Ottawa Senators will be ready to welcome people back into the CTC once it becomes a realistic option.
On the return to play, Melnyk sounds optimistic about the NHL finding a way to make a season happen. It’s still clear that there’s a lot to be worked out though.
He’s not particularly fond of the idea of an all-Canadian division although he says that primarily because he feels like the other six Canadian teams will all improve this season. And he has hopes of making the playoffs this season. His comments on not rushing prospects and a focus on development were also noteworthy and maybe something to keep in mind heading into Training Camp next month.
There are some comments towards the end on how the rebuild has played out and his commitment to spending in the future that will raise some eyebrows and roll some eyes but that’s to be expected.
Unlike past Melnyk media appearances, I promise this one won’t ruin your day. And actually, it’s probably worth a listen.
