The rumours started swirling on the draft floor, picked up over the weekend, persisted for what felt like an eternity today and now we finally know the details.
Matt Murray is headed to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Considering where this all seemed to be headed with the Sabres on Draft Day, this feels like a steel of sorts for the Senators. No bad contracts coming back and some fairly useless draft picks headed to the Leafs as a “sweetener”.
Like, job well done Pierre.
It goes without saying but the Matt Murray experiment was a fairly spectacular failure in Ottawa. The Senators hoped that Murray might be able to rediscover the form that he showed in two Stanley Cup wins with the Pittsburgh Penguins but it just wasn’t meant to be. There were flashes along the way but consistency was always the biggest issue. Add in some terrible luck with injuries and you have a recipe for disaster.
Honestly, it’s hard to imagine a worst scenario for Matt Murray than as starting goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs but we’ll see how it goes.
The Senators now give themselves some much needed budget flexibility heading into free agency too.
Remain buckled, folks.
