In the annual rookie tournament, there are always certain players that are expected to dominate. Some of the older more seasoned prospects should really be able to shine on a stage like this.
And that’s exactly what happened in the opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tobias Lindberg and Max McCormick each scored twice and Matt Puempel added one of his own as the Senators scored a comeback victory over the rookies from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
McCormick opened the scoring and was probably the most noticeable forward for the Senators. If you haven’t heard of McCormick yet, you certainly will this season. He was named top rookie for the Binghamton Senators last season and followed that up by earning the title of Hardest Worker at this year’s Development Camp.
He has made a great impression on the organization and will be an important player for the BSens this year. If injuries strike in the team’s bottom six, McCormick is a guy who could get a look at some point this season.
Same could be said for Tobias Lindberg.
Fresh on the heels of a Memorial Cup win with Oshawa last season, Lindberg got his season off to a good start, scoring twice against the Leafs including the overtime winner. Lindberg has size, skates well, has great hands and a big league shot, which he displayed on that overtime winner.
It’s tough to anticipate exactly how his game may translate at the NHL level but if the early viewings are any indication, there’s definite power forward potential there.
The Senators play the second game of the tournament this afternoon against the rookies from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
