On the heels of a disappointing loss to the New York Islanders, the Ottawa Senators are shuffling their roster a little bit.
This afternoon, the team announced that Lassi Thomson has been returned to Belleville of the American Hockey League. The 2019 first round pick has appeared in 11 games with the Senators this season.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise as Thomson has clearly impressed coaches and management during his brief and mostly unexpected stint at the NHL level. While the organization has been singing his praises over the last few weeks, it’s clear that they didn’t expect him to be a full-time NHLer this season.
To Thomson’s credit, he kind of forced their hand a little bit by playing so well in his brief stint. Like any young defenceman, he has struggled at times but it’s clear that he’s close.
So while Thomson is back in Belleville for now, it’s pretty clear that he has carved out an obvious role for himself on the blueline for years to come.
