We made it.
Well Jan Jenik and Adam Gaudette may not have but the rest of us did.
With last night’s 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators wrapped up their preseason as the best damn team in the entire National Hockey League, cruising to a 5-1-1 record. The preseason means nothing but as far as meaningless hockey goes, a bunch of wins over the Leafs and Habs is a decent way to get the ball rolling.
Now the Senators turn their attention to the real thing.
They have a full day off on Sunday before returning to the practice ice on Monday, ahead of a Thursday season opener against the defending Stanley Cup Champions.
As you’d expect, there’s still some roster shuffling expected in the next couple days. This afternoon, that shuffling saw both Jan Jenik and Adam Gaudette land on the NHL’s waiver wire.
Two of the most pleasant surprises in this year’s Camp, both Jenik and Gaudette forced their way into the conversation with strong performances and even if it’s not on Opening Night, they both proved that they can fill in should injuries become an issue this season.
In the meantime, it could be good news for Zack Ostapchuk and Zack MacEwen in the battle for those remaining fourth line spots but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out for sure.
Last night, the Senators also announced that Cole Reinhardt and Donovan Sebrango are Belleville bound while Dustin Tokarski was let go from his PTO. Meanwhile, Matthew Highmore is still on the active roster but because he was hurt in last night’s game, cannot be placed on waivers.
Rosters must be finalized by 5:00 PM on Monday.
