Game Day- Senators Host Hoffman’s Panthers

Well that’s odd.

According to this copy of the Official National Hockey League schedule I’m looking at, it appears as though the Ottawa Senators play again today.

I was under the impression that hockey games were supposed to be jammed within 24 hours of each other or awkwardly spaced at least three days apart.  A Sens game every couple days eh? Worth a shot I suppose.

The Ottawa Senators play host to the new Russian Rocket, Mike Hoffmanov, and the Florida Panthers tonight at the Canadian Tire Centre.

If you haven’t been following along, it turns out that Mike Hoffman is the best player in the NHL now. Like a young Matt Puempel, the Panthers are finally letting Hoffman play his game and it’s paying off in a big way.  So much so that even Don Cherry is suddenly pretending like he was always a big fan.

Hoffman has points in 15 straight games, breaking the franchise record previously held by Pavel Bure.  He’s just the 11th player in NHL history to register a point streak of 15+ games in his first season with a new team. That and he gets to live in Florida. So yea, the trade is working out okay for him so far.

Bad news is that point streak ends tonight in what is Mike Hoffman’s first game back in Ottawa since the trade. Also, while we’re here, he should stop wearing Jaromir’s Jagr’s number.

Meanwhile the Senators are looking to build on two strong outings in a row on home ice. In fact, if you ignore that ugly loss to these same Panthers a little over a week ago, you could make the argument that the Senators are playing some of their best hockey of the year.

Guy Boucher will have his team on the ice for a morning skate at 10:30 AM this morning. We’ll find out more about the line up then. For now, let’s assume they go with the same look as Saturday against the Penguins.
